    I think the way they used Smoak last year was pretty much perfect. He had 18 HR in 328 PAs. Compare that to 2013 when he had 20 homeruns in 521 PAs. You get the most out of him when you platoon him and potentially this could be a very productive platoon with the right right-handed bat. The bigger issue is whether or not Cola is really that guy. I think Valencia with his positional versatility would have undoubtedly been better but reportedly he's not a good clubhouse guy and Cola is an exceptional one so we'll just have to accept and respect the decision AA made on that. If Cola doesn't work out, maybe they could call up Pompey and use him against lh while pushing Bautista to DH and Eddie to first. At least Pompey gives you roster flexibility. They could also try Domingez in the Valencia role but I'd rather roll with Cola than him tbh.

    Yeah I don't actually know anything about him. Just saw Montreal as his birthplace on Baseball Reference and didn't look any further. It does list his high school as St. Joseph SS (Mississauga, ON).

    This is pretty much an idiot proof lineup which is good because a) Pillar is hitting leadoff Cola is facing a righty c) Cola is hitting ahead of Martin against a righty

    Colabello against a righty is a head scratcher. I guess this is just Gibby wanting to reward Cola.

    Stroman and Donaldson would be the worst of those. Too bad Danny V. was deemed a jerk or something because he would be a huge 3B depth upgrade. Martin would also be pretty bad since Tony Sanchez might very well be terrible. A Tulo injury seems inevitable. Hopefully, it comes after Travis returns. Pompey would probably make the Pillar injury the most navigable of those you mentioned. The first three would be pretty catastrophic.

    So what's the word on Morales? Seems like a competent pitcher unexciting lh middle reliever with decent splits (.275 career wOBA against LHH, non regressed of course because nobody has time for that). Things might get crowded when Loup comes back but he might also be on a split contract and Loup does have options if he needs more time of if Morales flat out steals the job. The more I look at it, the more I think this is a nice aggressive win now move by the front office. I like the idea of spending money to plug the Loup hole no matter how long it is. Oh yeah and I couldn't care less about a non asset like Tepera's feelings.

    I really liked the movement on his pitches and I think he could work LHB hard but I wouldn't say I made any conclusive determination.

    So who does a non-guaranteed contract work? He just gets the pro-rated portion if they cut him when Loup comes back?

    Aaron Loup still has options. I guess he might have to go to AAA when he comes back. This move is a bit puzzling. I mean I hate Tepera as much as the next guy but there were other options besides this. Girodo could have kept Loup's seat warm.
