  1. I think Ohtani knew more than he lets on, given how close he was with Ippei. Gambling to the degeneracy extent seems like a hard thing to hide 100%. But given how Ohtani let his mother control his finances, it's not a stretch that he also let Ippei do the same. Pretty much running all the day-to-day life things for him like how his mother did when he was in Japan. It's kind of unimaginable to ordinary people though, that anyone would be naive enough to do this. In a way you could connect the dots and say his family sheltering him led him to this outcome. Seems more like a Tim Duncan situation to me, but the IRS/Feds could uncover a lot still. Extradition from Japan to the US for wire fraud adds another dimension. There is a treaty but it won't be as easy as persecuting an American citizen.
  2. His interpreter is making 300-500k a year, which is a nice salary but not enough to cover that kind of bet
  3. So what's the most likely story? They were gambling illegally together? I couldn't see the interpreter taking the fall if he wasn't involved somehow
  4. 85 wins Lots of average to good players but few superstars to push them into 90+ territory. It could happen, but I'm not counting on it. Team depth is pretty good though so I'd be surprised if we ended any lower than 81 wins
  5. Have to admit it did make me happy after the whole Kevin Brown thing
  6. Agree 100% on #1. Hard to say about Guerrero since the management has always been a joke. No accountability anywhere in the chain from GM on down. It's little wonder three players were fat and they made so many silly mistakes on the bases all season. Granted we won't know unless they really clean house. I think Guerrero can be managed by the right manager though
  7. Moreno was only around 2 WAR, same as Varsho on the year. It still remains to be seen whether it was good or bad at the end. Not many 4-5 WAR position players on the market. Ohtani, Bellinger, or Chapman is about it. Otherwise, we look at more pitching and hope for an offensive rebound.
  8. Bo was 3.8 WAR, that's a very good season Vlad, not so much at 1.0 WAR Though I don't agree, just because a player is talented doesn't mean they should be expected to be a leader. That's what the manager position is for
  9. I do hope the Jays clean house on the management side. They still have a lot of talented players on the roster (pitching especially) who could do better with better guidance. I feel that Vlad/Kirk/Manoah being overweight is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of all the weird things that went on this season.
  10. Was Gausman going to start Game 1 of the ALDS on 3 days rest? The analytics aren't pretty on that either
  11. Raw sprint speed puts the Jays 16th (27.3 m/s). So it's a bit of that but much more bad decisions
  12. I think JS is just way too buddy-buddy/friendly with the players to hold them accountable for anything. Had to look it up on Fangraphs - Jays were 4th worst in baserunning, no surprise there
  13. More importantly I'd say that you need to communicate the general plan with the players. Last thing you want is them thinking about a shocking decision over the game itself. Really feels like there's a big disconnect between management and the players
  14. The problem isn't analytics, it's that the Jays don't have good analytics
  15. Jays were third in the league in IBBs. I refuse to believe that's good analytic-based decision making
  16. I wouldn't mind seeing Gibby back. He wasn't the most analytics manager but he was good for player morale. Jays just seemed demoralized all season... despite often being right in the mix. It was a weird vibe
  17. The Jays played to expectations, 89 wins. Atkins did put together a solid team. However I voted yes, because the team just wasn't fun to watch. I wouldn't even call it proper analytics but overmanaging. The IBBs, slap-hitting approach, being overly aggressive on the basepaths. All this stuff I highly doubt is backed by strong reasoned analytics. Most of the roster did not play to expectations on the offensive side. It was only because of very good pitching injury luck that the Jays made the playoffs
  18. I don't believe that pulling Berrios was a good decision even from an analytics perspective. You're burning up the entire bullpen, leaving nothing in the tank even if it does go to game 3 Jays are being overmanaged, there's a weird feeling of insecurity and trying to do too much. Just pull the ball and keep starters in for 80-90 pitches
  19. For some reason power was significantly up across the league in 2023, but Jays stayed flat from 2022. I think it's a bit of both tbh, losing some big names but also approach. Or maybe other teams are evolving their approach and the Jays aren't Would be interesting to know the pull/launch angle rates. Feels like the Jays hit a lot of deep center flies this season that would be HRs if pulled
  20. Agree with this 100%. Jays were #1 in HRs in 2021, and it's not like their roster changed that much. This year Jays were 16th in HRs. It really does feel like an approach thing
  21. I think there was a recent article that said power was actually more important in the playoffs. The logic was that pitchers in the playoffs are better, so you have fewer runners on base to string walks/hits together. So HRs account for a higher % of total runs in the playoffs.
  22. He's not a good manager at all. IBB is never a good decision as we saw today. For all the supposed 'analytics' they aren't making decisions that way
  23. It's still a bad decision every time. Gifts the other team +0.264 runs on average. Doesn't matter who is coming up next
  24. The intentional walk in extra innings never works out Jays need a smarter manager
  25. Fans can be justifiably frustrated. I mean it's not just one player on the Jays but 3 of our star players. I can't recall another team ever having such issues with player conditioning. Teams aren't going to dump or send down young players for being overweight because they're underpaid vs the free market. The carrot should be there already, Vlad/Kirk/Manoah are all already worth millions less than they otherwise would be. Not sure there's really a great solution for players being lazy. It's just bad luck really, no different than teams who end up with players who get suspended for DUI/abuse/perving on minors
