    Yeah the Pirates would want Moreno, Teidemann plus other stuff I bet. Wouldn't be worth it IMO.

    I just listened to At The Letters. Ben Nicholson-Smith was joined by Shi Davidi and they gave the following tidbits: -They are about 90% sure that Schneider will be manager -They don't think they’ll give Stripling the QO -If Stripling goes, Shi thinks they’ll sign a #4 and then also bring in another guy to compete with Kikuchi and White for #5 -When discussing the #4 SP, they say they could potentially go 3 years on a multi-year deal probably around Kikuchi money (Chris Bassitt's name is thrown in toward the end) -Both agree that trading a catcher is the Jays best chip to upgrade the OF/SP but there is no guarantee that one is traded -Ohtani is extremely unlikely via trade and they guess that he doesn't even move at all

    The other trade partner I could see is maybe the Pirates for Reynolds but it wouldn't be Jansen they'd want. They'd want Kirk or Moreno PLUS and I'm not sure I like that. They also have Bednar but I think they'll want too much for him. They also have some backend starters but their rotation is thin as is, I don't see them moving any of them.

    I tried to make something fair for both sides and realistic. You don't really like it which is fair but Laika doesn't think the Astros would really like it. That combined with the Trade Simulator score tells me it's at least fair enough to be within the realm of possibility. As for your comments on the players in question I think that's all pretty fair. -RP is volatile but Abreu has a lot of control left and he looks like a shutdown late inning guy. Everyone constantly talking about swing and miss and this would do it about as good as we could expect. -Urquidy is solid but he's hitting arb so will be more expensive and not providing as much surplus value. But still, this team desperately needs a #4 SP right now. -Meyers is kind of a throw in but he has some potential after an injury riddled year. His defense looks really really good and the bat isn't a total zero. Losing Jansen sucks but it's only 2 years of control left on him and we've got a 4 WAR Catcher and a Top 5 prospect to replace him.

    Yeah that's fair. I think we could possibly tweak it some and Jansen is also better than what I think this trade simulator gives him credit for.

    Maybe the Astros could be a good fit for Jansen. What about this? Gets us a #5 SP but I also checked the boxes for a "swing and miss" reliever as well as an elite defensive CF. I apologize that the CFer doesn't also bat left-handed; I know that's incredibly important to everyone but I promise it doesn't matter as much as you think. I also apologize for trading board favorite Craig Biggio's son but I also promise you that he's not very good.

    Now you're talking Spanky. I'd love to see that ******* hoist the World Series trophy above his head after pitching a gem for the Jays in Game 7 against the Dodgers.

    The point still stands. If Francona isn't man enough to tell the nerds upstairs to eat s*** when they tell him to start Aaron Civale in an elimination game against the Yankees then I don't want him managing the Jays.

    You guys see any cheap starting pitchers that catch your eye? I think the Jays are well positioned to get some cheap one year types and there's a lot of guys like that on the market this year. We've got two rotation spots we can basically promise if we want and they'll get to play for a contender with a good offense and decent defense. The teams we'll be competing against will often be non-contenders or they won't have as clear cut of rotation slots for them. As always it will mostly come down to the money but everything else should be pretty good for us. On the very cheap end of the spectrum Michael Lorenzen could be a good pickup.     Yeah I think you keep him, hope he has a big walk year, and then offer him the QO at the end of the year and get the pick and salary relief. If we are cash strapped it's probably best to work on the margins of the roster. Can DFA arb guys on the fringe like Thornton (1.1M projected arb). Try and trade Jansen (3.7M), Biggio (2.6) and Gurriel (5.8M) to fill needs and then look for some one year bargains in FA. If things are that desperate we could trade Cimber (3.2M) and Richards (1.5M) as well. Reading between the lines on things Shapiro and Atkins have said and I don't think it's that dire of a payroll situation but I don't see us dipping into FA for any major moves. Could see us getting to 200 tops, but probably see us coming in at 190 or so.

    Terry Francona just started Aaron Civale in an elimination game and predictably lost. Cross him off the list of guys I want to replace Schneider.

    If that woman running the Marlins gave us Adam Cimber and Corey Dickerson for Joe Panik imagine what she would give us for Craig Biggio's son.

    I'm definitely looking to trade Biggio. Projected to make 2.6M which will helps free up some money for pitching, the team clearly hates him and we've got minor leaguers who can replace him anyway. Maybe we could get a decent reliever for him.

    It does but going to be hard to find a good trade partner. With only one year left at ~15M only mid and large market contenders will consider him but what contender is going to give up a SP that's equal in value to Teo? The mid market contenders might be turned off due to his price tag anyway and the large market teams can just go sign an OF without taking away from the major league team. I suppose we could trade him for prospects (yuck) and then use the money to sign a starting pitcher? Hard to see a scenario where trading Teo makes the team better. This is why trading Jansen among the three catchers makes sense but no one wants to listen. He's only projected to make 3.7M but every penny counts in our current situation and at that salary and with two years of control left he would likely have more suitors than Teo would.

    Yeah I think at best they add a 10 million dollar starting pitcher and then the rest is done through trades or dumpster diving.

    Also, the Jays backloaded some of their deals. So while actual payroll is lower, the CBT payroll for luxury tax purposes is higher. There is some tricky stuff to this Tax Payroll number but things like Player Benefits might be included too. Cot's estimates those as 16.5M for every team. I think if we go around 200-210 payroll we will be pretty close to the 230M CBT luxury tax threshold.

    If you use MLB Trade Rumors' arb projections and non-tender Tapia and others we are already at 177.3 Million

    Does anyone have any guesses on what our payroll will be next year. It was about 171M this year, 11th overall in baseball.

    Yeah the Orioles will probably make a number of midlevel moves I would imagine. They have some really good young talent but the rest of the roster is really unimpressive to me. They need like 3 or 4 bats, 3 or 4 starting pitchers and I don't think the bullpen is going to be elite again. They also tricked people into thinking they were better than they were by contending as long as they did but they weren't even a true talent 83 win team, their pytho was 79-83. With the right moves they'll contend for .500 again. Maybe they can sneak in as WC3.

    Right. Merrifield at 6 mil >>> Bellinger at 18. Springer and Merrifield are perfectly capable CFers but the board just doesn't like old players so they'd rather dream up unlikely acquisitions just so they can have a guy in his twenties in CF (even if he isn't any good).

    Was messing around on Cot's and came across the Mariners. They are looking really good heading into next year. They need about 3 bats but only have around 110 Million on the books entering next year. They've been as high as 160M in recent years so they should be able to find the bats easily.

    Yeah and on top of it it's hard to see a new owner coming in and trading Ohtani as their first move. If he gets traded it's probably at the deadline.
