  1. The only difference between Rasmus and Lawrie is that at least Rasmus is not in denial as to where his career stands.
  2. I don't see how not subjecting your fan base to an Astros-style rebuild sucks. Shapiro and Atkins are better than this. They can field a decent team now while building for the future at the same time. Good drafting and player development, shrewd trades and free agent additions can go a long way to promoting both causes.
  3. I seriously don't get this...ditching Tulowitzki is a priority? His contract isn't great but it's not like it's Pujols-level bad. What's the solution? Pay a team $10M/yr to take him and field Goins and Barney out there everyday? Like it or not he's the best player the Jays have right now to play SS at least until the end of 2018. Might as well stick with him until then.
  4. ...and a deaf ladies man. I heard that Jim seduced a married woman of someone famous in Barbados. Must be Melania Trump that's why he hates the President so much.
  5. Dennis Ryan Tepera (born November 3, 1987) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball (MLB). He attended Brazoswood High School, and played college baseball for the Sam Houston State Bearkats.
  6. Let's review the facts. Despite the fact that Ryan Goins has put up a career fWAR of -0.3 and -1.8 if you exclude 2015, he has now occupied a roster spot on not just one but TWO Jays' front office regimes. If he stuck it out during AA's tenure you could write if off as a brain fart. But he has stuck it out under Shapiro as well. Sixth most plate appearances on this team this year. Clearly there is something about Goins that goes well beyond looking up a stat on fangraphs.com. You people are all just too narrow-minded to see that Gruber has caught onto that and is really a genius. Or do you all want to say that you know more about baseball than both Anthopoulos and Shapiro? Both men who rose very quickly through the ranks in baseball front offices at a young age.
  7. Damn fool BTS just guaranteed Goins is a lock on this team to 2019.
  8. You f***s are gonna jinx Stroman again if you keep this up.
  9. Excellent. Only thing missing is the Happ for Happ word play.
  10. I think the Jays have been big winners overall in the trade route save for AA's eight weeks of Beeston-induced fury in the winter of 2012. As far as developing hitters. Bautista, EE....Donaldson was good in Oakland but he's been unreal while here. Smoak finally picking it up after a few years. This team has been able to get the best out of its hitters for a while. Maybe not the "prospects" but age 28-30 seems to be the major breakout year for Jays hitters. Stockpiling Smoaks off the trash heap and hoping to strike gold on a few of them might be a good way for this team to compete while re-tooling.
  11. But the Yankees didn't blow it up last year. They went 84-78. Examples of incompetent teams having to resort to blowing it up recently because they otherwise lack the skills to develop consistent winners: Phillies, Astros, Nationals. Cubs would be there too...they come close except that the team's success had as much to do with shrewd/lucky moves like picking up and coaching Arrieta into an ace than it does with their years of ultra-suck and stockpiling of draft picks. Meanwhile the Yankees have yet to record a losing season this century and the Cardinals have one under their belt. This is what these "blow it up people" don't understand. It's not that people who are against blowing it up don't care about building for the future. It's that we expect more from Shapiro and Atkins than taking the easy way out. I have high expectations from Shapiro and Atkins. I want them to build for the future AND maximize the team's present potential.
  12. After seeing yesterday's game I know what's wrong with this team. 39-45 overall 23-18 with Donaldson out of the line-up 16-27 with Donaldson playing Time to trade the bum. Pillar really steps it up a notch offensively when he knows that he can't just kick back and let JD do all the work. Goins plays better when he's guaranteed a starting spot and doesn't get all psyched out wondering if he's in the line-up or on the bench that day. Martin turns up his offense when he's playing third.
  13. If I was an agent or an exec I'd structure as many deals like this as possible. Baseball will continue to grow in revenues and salaries at an absurd rate unless there is severe economic issues. Which in that case, everyone would have bigger problems to worry about than their baseball team paying retired players anyways. From a players perspective this equalizes the generational gap between salaries (though this is much less of an issue than it was back in the 1970's or earlier) and ensures that we don't hear pathetic stories of retired players in poverty because of poor decisions made in their youth.
  14. Considering how quickly baseball has grown in terms of revenues, player salaries and franchise value, this really wasn't such a bad deal for the Mets. What does $1.2 million get you nowadays in terms of talent? The league minimum salary will be more than that long before 2035 comes. Meanwhile the Mets could have used that $6M saved to bring in other talent that helped them get to the World Series that year.
  15. I agree. I could care less about Tucker. To keep Tucker the Raps would have to jettison two players in a salary dump instead of just one to avoid the tax. Let's not set too high expectations. Ibaka and Lowry were worth the cap situation the Raptors are in. DeRozan not so much but it is what it is. Him being here is likely the reason Lowry re-signed. Still, f***...you gotta think two years ago when the Raptors had cap space out the wazoo and 4 first round picks in the next two years that Masai could have been a little more creative than this.
  16. Pretty much what Dinger said. MLB-ready young talent to soften the blow of trading Donaldson plus another prospect in the #5-10 depth range of the buyer's farm. Maybe some add-ons. If some salary has to shift to make it happen, then do it. Jays have cash to spare if they are selling and need to build up their upper-level farm to make sure this team is exciting, relevant and hopefully competitive as soon as possible if the sell route takes place. Goins and Carrera cannot be staples of this club getting 500+ PA next season if the FO doesn't want to hemorrhage their base of casual fans earned in 2015-16. We were talking about Donaldson, my release comment was sarcasm.
  17. s***, well in that case I guess the Jays should just release him and hope someone will take him in a salary dump! Shapiro and Atkins aren't Ricciardi, Ash or Anthopolous. You don't need to start making pre-excuses assuming they get a non-optimal return for what will be by far the most elite player made available should the Jays indeed be sellers.
  18. I like these turn of events. With Ibaka this is the best roster this team has had for a full season. LeBron is a year older but even if he still can't be topped, going for the franchise record for wins at 58 should still be fun. I like this team, no matter what the dorks who believe "championship or bust" and that the team should tank think. JV will be traded for a bag of balls just to get under the luxury tax.
  19. As a contender you have the opportunity to acquire the player with the second highest WAR total in the previous two seasons and people are coming here with excuses like "everyone else has third base covered"? If you have Donaldson available to you for the next 1.5 seasons, you MAKE room on your roster for him. Eh? If there is a deal centered around Donaldson for Bregman that's not straight up it's not the Jays who should be the ones adding.
  20. Yes!!!! Keep up with the season is over attitude. We need this. This board is the perfect contrarian indicator. A summary of a few points off the top of my head: Goins will not stick - 2013 Saunders for Happ - great trade Estrada for Lind - could have done better Stroman is better than Sanchez - March 2016 Sanchez is better than Stroman - March 2017 Smoak sucks why the contract extension Grilli what a great pickup he's the anchor to the BP for the next season - August 2016 This team sucks time to sell - May 2015 This team sucks time to sell - May 2016 This team sucks time to sell - April 2017 I see a nice long winning streak coming up.
  21. That's only fair if we compare injury time to-date as well with players that are now back in the line-up. The Jays had some pretty AAA-worthy teams responsible for that -22. The point of the 2015 comparison is to suggest that there is a lot of time and that the Yankees are s*****, over rated chokers.
  22. I like this deal. In case I ever drop a Pillar-f-bomb I want the immunity.
  23. Until each and every one of you f***s line up single file and personally apologize to Gruber for being right, Goins will not be released from this team. The day you do that is the day he gets released and no longer sticks. The ball's in your court f***ers.
  24. Smoak deserves it. Might be the cheapest free agent contract player at the ASG. Shapiro wins again. GFY "sell high" guys. The Jays are still in it and this is a conversation that can be had in 2018 if need be.
  25. Another point I'd like to add....considering how this team started and how many players were on the shelf, it's a miracle that it has managed to climb back to the .500 mark so quickly and now has the fifth highest chance of making the playoffs in the A.L. according to the Fangraphs projection. Gibbons should be an early candidate for Manager of the Year. Remember when Pearce was openly crying on the bench? I think Gibbons played a big role in keeping the team's spirits up. A couple of wrong turns and this team could have been the Giants right now.
