I'd hope they could get a decent pre-arb reliever for Navarro. The DBacks seem dead set on moving Miguel Montero and don't have much to replace him with. After Dave Stewart gets fleeced for Montero, flip Navarro to him for someone like Evan Marshall.

Edwin is going to be DHing probably 70% of the time and I think Smoak gets about the same proportion of starts over at 1B. I'm perfectly fine with giving Smoak a shot at first everyday for such a bargain price. You'd be hard pressed to find a meaningful upgrade at first base that would be worth the cost.

In this case you'd also have to consider the in-house replacements for exiting players. Pompey (1), Norris (1) are also conservative expectations. This team is clearly better right now, and as you said, they aren't done yet.

I agree that depth is a potential issue and I think they should look at adding a starter to their rotation or re-building the depth at SP after the last two trades. I was just saying that I see their depth pieces are better than the Joel Carrenos of the league and are more likely to be able to fill in long term if needed. Of course nothing is a given, I just like Norris' and even Sanchez's chance of sticking over many of the past options. And it can't be ignored that Dickey and Buehrle are in the rotation. Any pitcher can break at any time but they might be the two starters in the league with the lowest probability of injury, if such a thing could reasonably be calculated. 2014's health compared to other years wasn't complete happenstance.

I like the idea of this thread but I think the numbers are skewed a bit by how s***** the rotations have been in the past. Presumably Estrada, Sanchez and Norris will be able to fill in the rotation as long as needed, barring injury. In the past you had some really crappy pitchers getting starts and were removed for another piece of crap because, even as depth, they just weren't cutting it. Guys who have made starts since 2010 include: Ramon Ortiz, Zach Stewart, Brad Mills, Luis Perez, Chien-Ming Wang, Bruce Tallet, Dana Eveland, Joel Carreno, Jesse Chavez (he sucked then), Shawn Hill, Aaron Laffey, Kyle Drabek, Jo-Jo Reyes, Marc Rzepczynski, Esmil Rogers, Jesse Litsch. Those names have made 162 starts over the last five years. Every fifth day since 2010 somebody from the above melting pot of hot garbage has pitched for the Blue Jays. And this doesn't even consider the bad years of Ricky Romero, Josh Johnson's disastrous year, McGowan in the rotation, Henderson Alvarez's bad year, Cecil's bad years in the rotation and others. Their rotation seems to be better this year. I don't think 12 starts will have to come from outside the 8 guys you mentioned. And if they do and I'm sure they could do worse than Roberto Osuna, Miguel Castro and maybe even Jeff Hoffman late in the year.

I think induction is actually correct here. I think in general, deduction is knowing the conclusion and guessing the details, while induction is knowing the details and guessing the conclusion.
