And all that aside, just on crazy erratic late inning throws, JPA/ Bonifacio threw away 6 wins. Arencibia did steal one.. one with a hero home run. So I count 5 losses that should have been wins. Throw in early inning blunders and terrible at bats and I'm still hovering at at least 8 more wins next year just by subtraction.
Nasty, nasty late movement on his fastball and good breaking stuff. Little to no command and that explains the numbers. Either he harnesses it or he doesn't but he's not a bust yet. The problem is that the two TJ Surgeries probably make him a future reliever. Reminds me of Todd Stottlemyre but just a little off.
Its funny. Happ is not a good starting pitcher and is way overpaid to be a long reliever. I can't blame the club for trying anything new to get value out of him but I can't see this ending well.
Recognition of their need and saying that they are anywhere close to perfect is quite different. Some are quite good, some are pretty bad. Good ones have bad games. They are still needed.
And just how do you do that when the strike zone is determined by a hitter's position as he swings? His hitting stance and not his position as he takes a pitch. An umpire must imagine the swing from the last stride from a hitter, if he is simply standing and taking.
Also, a hitter is generally at the back of the batter's box. A pitch could be high enough as it reaches the plate and yet be too low as it passes the batter. It is still a strike.
My best guess is that the rotation on opening day is Dickey, Buherle, Morrow, Happ, McGowan. By some point in May, Stroman and or Hutchison will plug in for an injured Dustin or Morrow or a crap Happ.
Not a huge fan of the rule as it is worded but really, runners shouldn't be laying out catchers if there is a path to the plate. If its completely blocked, drill him. That's my opinion anyway.
I'm really not very fired up. Happ is maybe a 5th starter in the National League, at best and Buherle has stunk for the first 5 weeks of every season since he turned 31. That leaves the club Dickey, Morrow and a mystery man to provide quality starts until May.
Being that all the runners are forced, you could then just tag the runner on 2nd or step on 3rd and throw to 1b. Pretty easy to tag that runner and then get your force. You are assuming a lot. You'd need bases loaded and no outs and the runner on first to get caught in a rundown to delay the triple play to get a run.
While I hear you, it is a slippery slope. Mark McGwire is the best example I can think of. Let's face it, fans had two choices with him. Get to see a super juiced home run machine play or not have him play at all. His back was screwed. The andro and HGH allowed him to recover and maintain.
As of now, it's all or nothing for McGowan. He has trained as a starter all off season and is in camp as a starter. Being that he's planning to leave it all on the table, that arm is either going to pop or he will be in the rotation.
I don't think that baseball is broken or in need of fixing. Tweaks? Sure.
1. Change the division round playoffs to a best of 7. The shorter the series, the more chance of an upset. Teams that didn't have a top 2 record in their league should really have to earn it.
2. A standard 100 seconds between half innings for all games, be they national broadcasts or not, regular season or playoffs. Keep games moving and consistent.
3. Create the 15-day contract. There are so many long time, suffering career minor leaguers who never get a shot because they would have to be added to a 40-Man Roster. Let's say a player with 7 years of minor league service and 0 MLB service can be called up as an asterisk 41st roster player. Some deserving guys would actually get a taste and we all might see some feel good stories.
