  1. I hear Shapiro is still tight with Omar Vizquel.
  2. Calling him irreplaceable is pretty much the same thing as giving him an extra million dollars during salary negotiations.
  3. Guys, we need 3-4 starting pitchers. We're not getting 4 David Price's, so temper your expectations. With this offense, All we really need is a consistent guy that can pitch 150 innings with a 4.5 ERA/FIP
  4. It's not black and white. Not everyone has the same potential obviously, but a good clubhouse environment, means you don't panic if you get a called third strike. It means you don't swing at garbage because there is a guy on 3rd base, and you want an RBI. If you like your teammates, you play for the team. If you don't, you play for statistics. A good environment, and good character teammates bring out the best in everyone around them. Case in point: There was a game last year when there was a runner on third base in the 9th inning. Nobody out, and Jays were down by five. Lawrie comes up, hits a flyball. The runner stays at third base (as he should). Lawrie has a mini-tantrum - not because scoring that run would have increased the Jays chances of winning, but because the smart play, hurt his RBI totals, and batting average.
  5. The piece you're missing Olerud, is that character is a big part of that. Guys like Arencibia and Lawrie were team leaders, and they didn't give a s*** about taking walks. They only cared about home runs and RBI's. By building a clubhous culture (and character is a big part of this), that fosters trusting your teammates to bring you home, and being more concerned with winning as a team than individual accoloades, it allows players to be patient and take walks, instead of constantly feeling a need to prove themselves.
  6. Sure, in theory that's possible. Winning two games by a one run margin, and losing one by an eight run margin, is better than winning one game by 20 runs, and losing two by a single run. But the issue is how do you manipulate it? Here are a couple of ways Also, there are a lot of late game situations when tactical moves (sacrifices) increase the chance of scoring one additional run, at the expense of scoring multiple runs. And intentionally walking a batter has the opposite effect. It lessens the chance of giving up a single run while increasing the chance of giving up multiple runs.
  7. If my dad died, I'd be taking the day off. Wouldn't care if it was the world series. Meanwhile, Loup takes the entire post season off because he had a preemie.
  8. I'm not sure whose quote that is, but Colabello was great for team chemistry. Guy speaks perfect Spanish, providing a nice bridge on the team between the Dominicans and the others, eroding the clique that had started. And he's even learning some Japanese just in case Kawasaki stick around. Full article is here. Big part of the reason why Gibbons likes him so much. http://www.wsj.com/articles/chris-colabello-the-toronto-blue-jays-team-linguist-1445553191
  9. Team chemistry, much like God, is assumed not to exist, by those can not see.
  10. Sounds like we'll be picking up AJP for backup catcher, if that's the criteria.
  11. I think the argument for both Dickey and Estrada is: Current Blue Jays rotation: Stroman Hutchison
  12. The thing is, no matter how great of a character guy someone is, if they have a .586 OPS, no one gives a s*** what they think. Now, if you have someone on the team who is one of the better players, and they are a leader, that's gold!
  13. I think Worley makes a lot of sense. Probably dirt cheap, and he would love a chance to work with Martin again, as those two were very succesful in 2014.
  14. No real need for him. Cola is good enough at first base, and he's decent against both LHP and RHP. I don't see a ton of bench value, unless you want to roll the dice on the chance of him hitting a home run. I'd rather run with Cola as our primary, and bring up Matt Hague as the backup/extra bat.
  15. I think they're still recovering from that abysmall trade with the Red Sox where they acquired Crawford Beckett and A-Gon for $250 million. Plus they have a 4th outfielder receiving $18 million, and a ton of money out there to pretty much every Cuban ballplayer with a raft. Friedman has a nice hole to dig himself out of. On the plus side, he's got $300 million to play with every year.
  16. Wouldn't miss his GM skills. Would miss his drafting skills a lot though.
  17. No way that they let AA go. That might have been the plan prior to the post-season, but he's looking good now. He''s basically cashed in all our chips (farm talent) for a couple of runs at the post-season, and that's usually all it takes to preserve the job. it's a bit like a politician giving out tons of special interest money, the year before the election. Make them happy in the final year at the expense of the future. Then leave when the cupboards are bare, and blame it on the next guy.
  18. I suspect there's some kind of tax avoidance thing going on, where they can claim that the money they make from the TV portion of the Blue Jays isn't that much, because they lowball the benefit of advertising themselves on Blue Jay games. There's no shortage of advertisers who would like to see their ads running during the Blue Jays, but somehow Rogers, always manages to show Rogers ads, we've all seen 2000 times for 30% of the game.
  19. So far, Ryan Goins career numbers are slightly higher than Johnny Mac's, but he's young so they could improve. But, I think everyone recognizes that Tulo has shorstop and Travis has second to start the year, which leaves Goins as a backup. Goins doesn't really add anything as a bench player, beyond being able to fill in, in the case of injury, and maybe late game defensive replacement for Travis. So, if they can get something decent for Travis great. If not, he's a decent backup, and winning teams need depth, even if it seems like we're wasting talent.
  20. Zaun is citing Price's 0-7 post-season starting record, as a reason not to sign him.
  21. Why not a full-time role, and why platoon him? His bat works against LHP and RHP and as we've seen his glove is not actually that bad at 1B. Just don't put him in the outfield, because it confuses the sabermetricians. Colabello is an unknown quantity right now. There's an element of fluke, but sustaining his numbers for as long as he did suggests, that he's figured something out.
  22. Sure, but we could probably acquire him for 4/48 and all the buckets of fried chicken he can eat.
  23. Just want to remind you guys, that it's been statistically proven that there's no such thing as clutch.
  24. Baby boy!
  25. Gotta think if we put a pinch runner in for Martin, Pompey would be on third now.
