  1. There's multiple variables involved. If you're able to duplicate the correct contact point, then faster swing speed = better. but if your faster swing leads to suboptimal contact point, then it's not really better. There's also the myth that you don't need to swing hard if the pitcher throws hard because the pitcher is supplying all the power. That's an incredibly simplistic view of a complex series of events, but it goes back to my previous statement. If all other variables are equal, it still holds that a harder swing = more distance. A guy swinging 75 mph at a 95mph pitch will not hit it as far as a guy who swings 80 mph at a 95mph pitch, if the contact points and other variables are equal.
  2. LOL Find me a modern day 8 fWAR 1B with no power and not positve Defense. Please. Olerud is probably the closest you could name and he had both plus defense AND above average power in his 8 fWAR years The argument is not that a 1b cannot be useful without power, it's that as your power slips down, the 1B defense and every other aspect of the game has to go up to compensate for it. Horwitz likely has the ability right now to be as good as Vlad was when he was stuggling... probably. Horwitz probably has a 3 fWAR ceiling at 1b. That's not nothing, but it's not what you're targeting by any stretch.
  3. Trying to hit for average at the expense of power is stupid. All analytics depts know this. I highly doubt the Jays are actively pursuing this approach, they're just ending up there because they don't seem to know how to communicate effectively to their players. I can see why the belief is there though since they're entire player development plan seems to be taking guys with good contact ability and trying to teach them to hit for power. Obviously it's not working... so they're really left with a few options to explain it. Either it's a stupid way to try and develop guys to begin with, or they just really suck at teaching power.
  4. Trevor Williams maybe? White Sox might also try to get what they can for Fedde while that iron is hot. Detroit will probably be shopping Flaherty
  5. True, but a Keith Hernandez bat (or Mark Grace for that matter) without the "best defense of all time" at 1b isn't worth a ton. That's basically what Vlad was until his recent hot stretch.
  6. This is just my guess from the eyeball test, but if I was opposing him i'd be upping the usage of changeups or splitters. looks like he can handle the hard stuff and breaking balls pretty well.
  7. Yeah, at least if he was healthy and the team was sucking he could be dealt for something useful.
  8. Romano had arthroscopic surgery to relieve an impingement, 6 weeks before he can throw again. Could return this season if all goes well... which... probably makes zero difference to anything
  9. Would seem it would have to be some kind of issue, they haven't been taking any SP out stupidly early this season at all.
  10. Not gonna lie, that 2 seamer at 99 could make a huuuuuge difference for him Savant still has them classified as 4 seamers but it was clearly shown he was using a 2 seam grip for some of those FB and had waaaay more run than a 4 seamer would One of them had 17 inches of horizontal run.
  11. Buck seems to think Berrios is hurt or something.
  12. Well then, what are you mad about, the fact they sent him out seemingly for no reason, or for not being g clairvoyant and taking him out when he went out there for seemingly no reason? Can't be mad at both
  13. Kinda yeah, but....wasn't even a bad 3-0 pitch.
  14. No worries boys, the pen will hold this.
  15. Because he knew he was about to give up 5 runs?
  16. Yall bumping yesterdays gdt
  17. Springer going on a heater right now.... while awesome for him, is actually pissing me off. lol
  18. Youre right that they dont have to act like New York or LA and just keep everyone and hope.... but they also dont need to act like the Rays and trade everyone before they get to arb 2 regardless of how good they are. Its just that of all the scenarios that could have played out, many of which are extremely positive, the scenario currently playing out is like the 3rd worst one imaginable. And contending doesn't necessarily mean contending for best team in baseball. I don't think they had any delusions of being a team in that conversation, but a top 10 team? That's a contending team, regardless of how they get into the playoffs. And to think they could be a top 10 team in 2024 isnt a stretch when you see they were a top 9 team in 2023 that had several offensive players massively underperform. So, a team that isnt the Rays and doesnt have to be, is never going to trade Bo with 2 years left on his deal.
  19. All of that is hindsight though... and we have no idea how close or not close they were in extension talks. But lets assume they were far enough apart that they knew an extension couldn't get done this past offseason, why should that automatically equate to being traded? They still had plans to compete this season, so trading him in the last offseason wouldnt make sense either. Obviously nobody sees Bo being this bad in 2024, so the "well he had a bad few months last year so it should have been obvious he was going to be terrible" argument is just brainless. Not saying you're making that argument, but you know some people think it. There really was no reason in the last offseason to trade Bo when they had plans on contending in 2024. Hell even if Bo flat out said "i will not sign an extension here so don't bother offering" they'd still look at keeping him for at least 2024 before looking at a deal in this upcoming offseason. unfortunately, worst case scenario happened... Bo sucks and his value for trade is in the shitter.
  20. As well they should. The thing with those smaller market teams that receive revenue sharing, they also get those additional "small market" comp picks every year between rounds 1 and 2 and rounds 2 and 3. I think rather than excluding them from a top 10 pick, they should be excluded from those ones instead.
  21. I think if they're at the place where all the pending FAs are being dumped, they wont be likely to bring in any OF from outside the org unless it's a pure placeholder. I don't see them acquiring a longer-term OF in season.
  22. Trading KK whilst eating a chunk of his remaining salary should be the easiest sell out there. The return won't be anything impactful though.
  23. Roof is open
  24. Somewhere, there are clouds that need to get yelled at....
  25. Danny Jansen placed on Paternity list, Serven recalled.
