  1. A state of the art facility is going to help land top or preferred talent in free agency, so you should care a bit.
  2. Top SP remaining by projected WAR Odorizzi 1.7 Porcello 1.5 Leake 0.9 Hamels 0.7 Bailey 0.6 So really just two half-decent options unless you find a dead cat bounce possibility from Hamels or Bailey attractive. Decent chance at this point that one of Odo or Porcello signs for f***ing peanuts though.
  3. I dunno, it's not that hard. "This is the equivalent of 1/$10M to you but we have a payroll limit and have to offer it like this"
  4. Why did you say you "raised the idea" though?
  5. Not much more to add. Signed for $1.5M in 2019 then immediately had TJS. I would guess they need to see him in spring before deciding. If they view him as a pure relief prospect then AA could be where he starts. He is 23, so not particularly young, and he has pro experience in Cuba. They might even send him to AAA to relieve. The AAA season is starting earlier. If they think he can start then AA might be a bit aggressive.
  6. Link shows someone else raising the idea, Jim.
  7. If Gurriel can't play 3B and any of Bo/Semien/Biggio get hurt, Panik or Espinal becomes a starter or Vlad is bleeding runs at 3B again. If Gurriel can just play an okay 3B then if any of those three get hurt Grichuk becomes a starter. It might actually be a big benefit. Grichuk >>> Panik or Espinal.
  8. tidbit from Kevin Goldstein on Manoah: "I thought Manoah was the best pitcher in the 2019 draft, and frankly it wasn’t close." now that might not be saying much. i think only Lodolo went before Manoah.
  9. Gurriel has been taking groundballs at 3B, eh....
  10. Ah I was going to say the same thing. Not MikeM but remember playing with Cyborg? Yeesh.
  11. For sure. There are fist fights in my mens league ball hockey league. Give men anything round and bouncy and they will compete and try to win.
  12. I think Tatis and Mejia are their only successful publicized players. They are basically just running models and projecting WAR. They might have other players in the big leagues right now, bound by confidentiality. The SI article on Big League Advance from 2018 mentions them signing up an A's pitcher with really good stats in A ball... I wonder who that was.
  13. Agents have a deal directly with the players, so it depends on the player-agent contract. MLB is not allowed to pay agents directly. Generally the player will pay his agent after he receives salary. Sometimes this is an annual lump sum and sometimes it is a few installments per year, depending on the player-agent contract. Acuna could fire his agent today and hire Jay Z but the agent who negotiated the $100M contract likely still gets his cut going forward as Acuna is paid, based on the terms of the player-agent contract.
  14. I hear some salty Jays fans crawling this way...
  15. It's Grichuk vs. Tellez at the plate.
  16. Grichuk's plate appearance incentives would be a good reason not to have him be a starter. Every player on the roster is an "investment", Grichuk just has almost no chance of returning a profit at this point while other players like Tellez still do.
  17. Who else thought this was thin Vlad for two seconds?
  18. Springs doesn't have Anderson/Fairbanks stuff though. He's a changeup lefty who throws 92. It's a good changeup but he does absolutely strike me as one of those guys who will give up a bunch of runs while also getting a bunch of strikeouts. I wonder if the Rays are just kind of looking at their bullpen as a whole and, under the octopus theory, thinking that Springs gives them a much needed additional look in 2021.
  19. 7 top 100 prospects and the writer thinks Toronto has a crummy farm system smh
  20. People in the industry probably like Sanchez a lot more than this message board does. 28, fantastic stuff, 3.98 career ERA, could be an elite reliever or a useful SP still. Most orgs would want a chance to work with that guy in 2021. I might take him over Taijuan Walker!
  21. Irrefutably the 2020 Red Sox pitching staff had the worst results in the history of baseball, at least by one measure. Nobody would claim anything other than that. Nobody would claim that their team talent was stable and predictive over those 60 games.
  22. I don't see the difference. Either is fine.
  23. You'd expect teams with low positive WAR to show up on the rankings though. If you simply extrapolate the innings to a full season all of those teams are no longer on the first page. If you do that for Boston their s***** "lead" actually grows. Of course you would project the 2020 Red Sox to be much better over the next 102 games and it's very likely they would have flipped the script and ended up with some positive WAR but it's still hilarious how bad they were. Anyway, those 2006 Royals look like the worst rotation of the modern era by my money. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2006&month=0&season1=2006&ind=1&team=7&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2006-01-01&enddate=2006-12-31&sort=8,d

They are not even close, though. Wayne Gretzky has some just f***ing silly records like: If you ignore every goal he ever scored he's still a slam dunk hall of famer If you ignore every goal he ever scored he's still #1 in career points all time If you ignore all of his goals he still lead the league in scoring on assists alone multiple times Gretzky has more apples than Lemieux has points, right?

Wayne Gretzky vs his sport is clearly better than Jordan or Brady vs their sport. I mean people validly debate Lebron vs Jordan right now. Also, Serena Williams...
