  1. This sort of thing can already happen if an ump calls time mid-pitch motion It would be the same I imagine. Ump all of a sudden hollering for clock violation mid pitching motion.
  2. Basically I think the anti-shifting rule needs to be more extreme if they want it to have a significant impact. Something really lame like lines on the field defining where each infielder is allowed to stand at pitch release.
  3. Baseball is exactly the same if Kyle Schwarber hits .223 instead of .211
  4. They have data on this stuff from the minor leagues. I have not seen it but I know Eno Sarris said it does not have a significant effect on most players. The main thing that defensive shifting seems to take away are hits up the middle. This rule does nothing to stop that. And I'm not sure we should even care - allowing more hits up the middle is going to benefit a lot of slap hitters. And of course Vlad lmao. I just don't think LEFT vs RIGHT is going to make much difference to the guys who face extreme shifts. Maybe a handful of extra singles a year.
  5. I don't think the shift rules are going to have a significant impact. The 4 man outfield is rarely used. This new rule still allows a defender to play up the middle or right on top of 2B, meaning teams can and still will shift effectively against RHB GB and LHB GB. Teams can still position outfielders wherever they want. The only thing that the new rule theoretically stops is the infielder playing in short RF to take the odd hard hit single away from LHB sluggers.
  6. But perhaps it's not about fitness. He is being pitched differently and it's made him worse. 2021 31.4% 4 seamers 16.7% sinkers 20.8% sliders so 48.1% fastballs and 20.8% sliders 2022 26.7% 4 seamers 18.8% sinkers 26.1% sliders So significantly more sliders. And a few more sinkers vs 4 seamers. Many less 4 seamers. He crushed 4 seamers in 2021. Also really interesting is his first pitch swing % is 32.5 the lowest of his career but his overall swing % is 49.2 the highest of his career. In 2021 he swung a lot at first pitch FASTBALLS and crushed them. You can spin an easy narrative which matches what we see on TV. Lots of first pitch sliders. He is doing the right thing and taking them. But then he is losing the plot for the rest of many plate appearances and gets way too swing happy. His chase % of 29.6 is the worst of his career. His meatball swing % of 80.1 is the worst of his career. I think this is more about his gameplan at the plate than it is about fitness. He KNOWS they are giving him sliders. He does not want to go up there hacking at the first one. But after that he is in between fastball slider and generally without any productive of effective plan at the plate...
  7. Yeah I assume similar things.
  8. Tatis will be eligible for 2023 postseason I think
  9. he's just saying if you can only get 2 teams maybe contraction to 14 is better than trying to find 2 randoms
  10. In a typical season, any player who is on the 40-man roster or 60-day injured list as of 11:59 p.m. ET on Aug. 31 is eligible for the postseason. Those on the restricted list at that point are also eligible if they haven't been suspended for performance-enhancing drugs during that season. (All players who have served a suspension for PEDs in a given season are ineligible for postseason play that year.) A player who doesn't meet said criteria for postseason eligibility can still be added to a team's roster in the postseason via petition to the Commissioner's Office if the player was in the organization on Aug. 31 and is replacing someone who is on the injured list and has served the minimum amount of time required for activation. (For example, a player on the 10-day injured list who has been on it for at least 10 days, or a player who has been on the 60-day injured list for at least 60 days.) Players who are acquired in September or after are ineligible.
  11. good question I guess although awkward timing with Gurriel being hurt maybe just put Kikuchi on the 60 day DL for being too genuinely himself
  12. nah you could kick Charlie in the nuts and he wouldn't lose his grin Schneider on the other hand looks like he's about to have a coronary episode even when he's calm
  13. It's also possible that the Montoyo firing was as much about Schneider as it was Charlie. Like maybe before they weren't quite sure about Schneider but over time they came to see him as a competent manager. And then this year saw him as potentially better than Charlie for various reasons. So the team slump was a good time to make the change.
  14. Tactically the front office basically tells the manager what to do They tell them how to optimize player usage Most managers ignore what the front office tells them to do some % of the time. With the Rays that will be like, 2% of the time. With Toronto that might be like 10% of the time. With s***** organizations the analytics department has no power and there is old school managerial discretion. I actually think one reason Montoyo got canned was not following the front office optimization plans enough.
  15. also testosterone
  16. also lineup shuffling
  17. very hard for them to be worse than that
  18. Losing Gurriel does not feel that significant because he was playing so poorly last 30 games .240/.287/.322 ---- that's f***ing brutal for a guy with no real defensive value
  19. He'd be playing more if he wasn't sucking
  20. I can't understand the call with Kirk. The Sanchez call I saw the justification for because of dropping his knee. Like he physically began blocking the plate before the ball touched his glove. All Kirk did was inch towards exactly where the ball was thrown. And how can they say Rutschman had no sliding lane when he literally slid into the plate without contacting Kirk? It's complete nonsense. I just don't understand why the SETUP of the catcher even matters. All that should matter is whether or not the runner has a clear lane to the plate when they slide.
