  1. I wouldn't be surprised if hype was their goal. As far as selling or trying again, you could sell during the season as well. The lack of moves is certainly frustrating for many, but I'm one of those who wasn't behind the change of direction and would've been fine to wait for the top-10 farm to bear fruits so if they end up sucking again and trading Rasmus, Bautista and others for a good return, it wouldn't be the end of the world.
  2. Some would be screaming that Rogers is cheap if they put in an offer just for the heck of it, say 100/5 + the posting fee. I think if you're in this thing, you go for it to win it and if you're not willing to give the best offer, you don't do it. Some here have pointed out the risks of giving pitchers long term contracts, yet may end up screaming that the team should've offer 7/150 or something like that. This team has definitely put itself in this position by missing out on Darvish, Sanchez, Peavy and then making the trades they made last off season as a result so they have no one but themselves to blame.
  3. I never expected them to sign him so I can't say I'm disappointed. I have strong suspicions there isn't much money available and all signs point to Goins at 2B and Happ, Rogers, Redmond, McGowan, Hutchison and even Drabek battling it out for #4-5. I guess they could still sign one of the remaining starters, but I suspect the market will pick up for them once Tanaka signs this week. I wanted them to get Ruiz, Infante/Ellis and Baker, but only Baker remains and he's a Boras client and we know uncle Beeston won't give Boras a penny.
  4. Who knows is about right. If there's no money to add to the team, then I blame the higher-ups since there's no way you authorize the Marlins trade without understanding the ramifications on future payrolls, starting in 2014. We'll have to continue to wait and see.
  5. Unless acquiring MB, Reyes and others wasn't actually their plan but rather something they stumbled upon. It wouldn't surprise me if their budget was actually 140 instead of the rumoured 150M. We'll see what happens, but not going after Infante or Ellis seems to point to their having little to spend. Ok, this would be assuming they realized that going with Goins is a recipe for another disaster.
  6. Stop worrying, he probably got laid for the first time and went back for more.
  7. I'm happy not only because this report turned out to be inaccurate, but also because there's a chance at least one poster has found his way out of his mom's basement.
  8. True dis. At least Goins will play good D....oh s***, I just jinxed him.
  9. I seem to remember reading a quote from AA that if a starter was acquired, one might/would be leaving.
  10. Another thread that turns into a Happ-less discussion...very fitting for this off season.
  11. So everyone's nightmarish scenario at 2b is coming true, lol.
  12. Because he thought he could get someone else. Or who knows, maybe there's no mo' moolah to spend even. I'm one of those that doesn't buy the idea that last off season's seeming change of direction was all part of their plan so it's possible that they can't go above 140M.
  13. Imagine what McGowan owes them
  14. What if said player never failed a drug test?
  15. Hey look, it's Bud helping out big market teams again!
  16. For what it's worth, I've thought for a while that if AA gets one of the FA pitchers, Happ could be traded with a reliever, hopefully for middle infielder.
  17. I think the issue is more Buehrle's contract though. Let's say Buehrle was making between 10-14M, then there's your 5M, maybe more, for a 2B/SS.
  18. I'm certain as well, I just meant that AA wants to add a top 3 starter and that would knock Happ down to the be the 5th starter.
  19. Yeah, but if AA was fine with this, he wouldn't be focusing his whole off season on improving the rotation.
  20. They signed Redmond last year to a minor league deal and he did as well.
  21. This franchise cares a lot about optics even if it means making at least a questionable move. I remember Bautista being quoted about the team having promised him that they'd do what's necessary to compete and even Farrell saying something about wanting a starter. Making a trade for a guy like Happ can also help them tell the casuals that they're trying to do something. Plus, since the rotation had so many holes, even a guy like Happ might seem appealing.
  22. Those who operate the franchise obviously cared enough to trade for a starter.
  23. Except that none of the other options presently available were options at the time Happ was acquired.
  24. In all honesty, I've whined about the Happ trade as much as the next guy, but let's be honest, the rotation was decimated by injuries at the time, not to mention Romero's implosion. I think only Henderson Alvarez was left standing at the time.
  25. If the other prospects sent to Houston end up amounting to nothing, the Jays may end up having traded a future 5th starter for a present one. We know that Perez was exposed to the rule 5 draft already.
