  1. And I didn't say anyone did. I suggested he made a signing equally stupid to Amaro's signing of Papelbon, the poster boy for GM stupidity....and well deserved I might add. This is not to say that I disliked JPR, he had a decent record as a GM and treated the media rather well, but I don't really dwell on GM's which is why I praise Sternberg and DeWitt first and foremost for the Rays and Cards success.
  2. Is there really a huge difference between B.J. Ryan's contract and Papelbon's? Yet Amaro is vilified for signing Papelbon. Imagine if AA gave a closer such a contract...the horror. I know I sound like an AA apologist, but some of the stuff that's said is rather rich.
  3. They seem to have the same injury excuse. Big ifs. I couldn't care less whether AA gets fired or not, but JPR had 7-8 years. I think they have the same record after 4 years. I'm one of those who thinks that organizations are built from the top. Some say that Godfrey forced JPR to do certain things, yet scoff at the suggestion that Beeston may have a big hand on the team's obvious change of direction last off season. I'll take a guy like Sternberg or DeWitt and trust that they'll set out the right vision for the GM to execute.
  4. It's probably a negotiating ploy. On the other hand, there was that report that the Jays offered him $27M over 3 years. I would think that's not far off what he should expect, maybe $30M over 3 years, unless another team bids against itself which has been known to happen.
  5. Barry Davis posted a picture of Cabrera's scar (hope link works): https://twitter.com/SNBarryDavis/status/437221954312208384/photo/1
  6. So what could go wrong with the other teams? We know the jays have lots of "IFS", but when does age catch up to Ortiz? Can Napoli avoid reinjuring the hip? Is Lackey's 2013 performance here to stay? How about Victorino? Does Texeira come back to what he was? Will Ellsbury and Longoria play in more games than their 120+ 3-year average? Is Sabathia starting to decline and when does age catch up to Kuroda? There are probably more questions to bring up, but Ortiz's performance continues to amaze me.
  7. Not bloody likely. What would the QO be for him? I'd like to think he'd just accept the offer and go year to year.
  8. LOL @ both Cruz and M's.
  9. I would think players who are QO'ed, and their agents, should start adjusting to the new market realities that come with having a draft pick attached to them. What would Morales cost now, $5M for a year? I would think the M's would take him back at that price....and put him in CF.
  10. At the point when the owner says so. And this point will be when they don't make money and/or they're getting tons of bad PR. Basically, that's how it is.
  11. Let's hope he comes close to 2012
  12. LOL, FA year baby!
  13. I would've been fine with unloading them after the 2012 season as I think they had hit a snag in the rebuild and needed to take a step back to be in a better position to take 2 steps forward. I'm not saying I disagree with you, in fact, I'm hoping for what you suggested which is why I'm not up in arms about the lack of moves this off season. However, you have to remember that Rogers owns the Jays and one of the reasons they bought them, maybe a big or the biggest reason, was for content for Rogers Sportsnet. In order to have taken a step back after the 2012 season or to take a step or 2 back now, Rogers would have to be willing to accept lower attendance, viewership, interest and revenue or even profits. One thing people forget in all of this, except for TheHurl, is that the team's been doing better attendance and ratings wise, so in this sense, AA and Beeston have been doing a big part of their job, at least as far as the owner is concerned.
  14. I think you're describing a rebuild not a retooling when you're talking about unloading EE, JoeyBats and a couple others. This franchise needed to accept to take a step backwards after the 2012 season in order to be in a better position to take 2 steps forward. Had they done this for the 2013 season, the team would be in pretty good shape both in terms of almost-ready prospects and financial flexibility. However, accepting to take a step back likely would've also meant fewer tickets sold, ratings and interest, so I think that played an important part in their decision-making.
  15. Yup, some of his comments make you ask for a pic of her crotch area...in "her" panties, of course.
  16. Some here were saying much different things going into last year, in fact they were pretty giddy about the season, now they say they knew the team would stink. I say this 'cause I've been checking out the MLB board archives. Anyway, doesn't change anything.
  17. I think what several said about the Red Sox was that they had several injury concerns. Remember, Ortiz and Pedroia were injured in 2012 (I think), not to mention that Ortiz was 37 last year; Napoli had to rework his contract because of his hip; Victorino was believed to be in a big decline; Lackey missed the 2012 season (I think). So you add all this up and you get major question marks. All of the above could show up this season and not many would be surprised.
  18. I hope you're right that they'll try to get back onto the "long term sustainable winning" path. They'll look even more stupid for going all in last off season, but if you make a mistake, it's important to admit it and try to correct the situation as much as possible. The thing is, AA has a penchant for sticking his foot in his mouth and this off season was no different, I'm referring to his comments of looking to add 2 maybe 3 starters via FA or trade. In order to get back on that path though, they'll have to move at least one of their good position players to get one or 2 young guys in return. A good first half by Rasmus could entice a team to give up something decent, just one example.
  19. Many were excited last year because they thought RR would bounce back enough to be the 5th starter thus making Happ the 6th starter. Many expected Happ to be in AAA and thought that AA gave him the extension so that he would accept pitching every 5th day for Buffalo.
  20. It's all window dressing.
  21. Bailey is reportedly close to signing an extension. A couple of the other guys could also sign extensions, who knows. As far as taking the wait and see approach for 2014, I'm fine with that, but they look pretty stupid because that's what they should've done last off season instead of overpaying in both $ and 'spects. Had they taken that approach last year, they've have a good core with upper-minors prospects almost ready. Also, I thought it was a 3-year window? At this point, it's looking like a 1-year broken window.
  22. It's weird though, a lot of you guys said you'd rather sign Capuano, or someone like him, than sign Jimenez or Santana. I understand that Jimenez going to the Orioles makes it worse, but I'm not too concerned, I'm looking forward to Stroman and Hutchison joining the rotation hopefully in June....hey, gotta look at the positives.
  23. I jumped off a bridge upon learning about this, but survived! LOL. Not surprised in the least. I don't think the Jays have much money to spend, but I do expect a rumour to surface claiming the Blue Jays offered more money, but Jimenez chose the O's for less money. Seriously though, if they do have some money, hopefully they get Drew and Capuano, but Boras! The Blue Jays organization does a lot of things based on PR. This off season, they think they've been doing damage-control by claiming to be looking to sign a SP, but in reality, they'll end up doing more damage to themselves as they'll lose even more credibility with the fans, even the casuals.
  24. Plus D'Arnaud, Lawrie, Rasmus/Gose/Marisnick, Escobar, Hech (I know he can't hit, but still). Don't forget that there's a decent chance they would've ended up with a top-5 pick in the upcoming draft plus the 11 pick. I also think Bautista would've requested a trade in mid-2013 if they had decided to take a step back, that could've fetched a couple more young players. Ok, I'll stop dreaming now....
