  1. Didn't Santos reportedly get traded for Kinsler or something? Anyway, great to see the board in full cynic-mode.
  2. Arguably, they would also be looking at a top 5 draft pick 'cause they would've likely lost over 90 games. That's a key right there, I don't think this franchise was willing to go into a season being expected to lose 90 games.
  3. Is it just my conspiratorial mind of is John Stilson injured? I think he left the AFL early in the off season and I don't see him anywhere on the ST roster. You would think a guy that pitched 47 innings of relief at Buffalo last year would be in ST camp, but he's no where to be found. Who knows.
  4. Goins aside, it'll be interesting to see what Seitzer can do with Gose and if Lawrie's improved 2nd half performance carries over into this year. Given that Lawrie had finally sought out help from DeRosa, EE and Mottola, if he were to struggle early, there could be some second-guessing of AA for firing Mottola. We also know that he was with the Royals at the same time Cabrera was there and I read a quote from him this week saying how he saw something right away in Cabrera's swing that he would address. If Cabrera can hit like he did with the Royals, that's a nice plus. We'll see what happens.
  5. Not only for the press, but the last thing you want is a coach saying one of his players is crap. I think Gibbons threw JPA under the bus earlier in the off season and I think he was wrong to do that, just play diplomat and say the right things, no need to hurt your team's bargaining position.
  6. I would've been fine with tanking the 2013 season instead of making the Marlins trade. However, given that a big reason Rogers even owns the Jays is for content for it's all-sports channels and they don't want to put out a 90-loss team on the field, I could live with the Marlins trade as long as the president and owner were clear on the financial ramifications. The Dickey trade was really unbelievable to me. I was raging on the MLB board, I wouldn't have even done D'Arnaud or Syndergaard for Dickey straight up. Anyway, it's too late now.
  7. There come times in rebuilding phases when you have to be willing to take a step back to take 2 forward and this is what I believe Rogers/Beeston aren't willing to do because they want to keep a watchable product on the field. The Jays were in such a situation after the injury and performance setbacks they had during the 2012 season from Hutchison, Drabek and Romero respectively. I believe the mandate for the 2012 off season was to NOT strike out in improving the team because if they did, they would've likely lost over 90 games in 2013. Strike 1 was the failed Peavy acquisition. Strike 2 was Sanchez reportedly giving them the runaround and then they went back to the Marlins in desperation mode and ended up overpaying. At least in my creative mind.
  8. I think it was the runaround they reportedly got from Sanchez. If you tell me you want an 8-year deal, I think you're telling me "thanks for the dinner and courtship, but I'd rather go somewhere else". Sanchez had an agreement with the Tigers that they'd get a chance to counter the best offer they got. A deal with the Cubs was reportedly very close to being finalized, but Sanchez went back to the Tigers and they matched or topped the offer.
  9. Nope, it was after reportedly striking out on Peavy and Sanchez that AA turned his attention to JJ. The way things went down is why I believe AA was under some kind of pressure to not strike out on improving the team, especially the rotation given the set backs they had.
  10. Which is why I was particularly pissed about dealing D'Arnaud and Syndergaard. Anyway, too late now.
  11. How many teams are owned like the Jays? I could be wrong, but most teams seem to be owned by one guy or a small group of people who are more involved with the team's direction rather than an owner like Rogers who appoints a guy like Godfrey or Beeston and lets them run the team and set policies like not dealing with Boras clients or the 5-year contract limit.
  12. Weren't they also around or slightly above in mid to late July in 2012 as well? I think at that point they were 5 games out of the 2nd WC then Bautista came back briefly only to go back on the DL for the rest of the season. Anyway....
  13. As much as people may disagree, I think ultimately, the franchise decision-makers would be thrilled with a 2nd WC race. People assume that ownership and its representative are interested in having the most efficiently-run organization, but I happen to think they'd be happy with your scenario.
  14. Not to mention the farm. Imagine Syndergaard, Stroman, Hutchison and Nolin at AAA or battling in ST for a rotation spot with Sanchez and Nicolino at AA. Not to mention possibly a top 5 pick had they stunk in 2013.
  15. Not if his bosses have assured him that short of losing money, he'll be there. It seems he's acting with a certain lack of urgency that suggests this.
  16. I can go either way, I have my doubts, but I don't think it's far-fetched at all that they'd offer that. The team's pitching was decimated by injuries and RR's implosion to the point where only Morrow, Alvarez were left standing, I can totally see it under these circumstances.
  17. I think part of why he's standing pat is that he wants to see the team healthy before making some of these crucial decisions. I also think there's a chance he's doing the franchise's bidding and taking the heat for it having been told that he won't be canned as long as the team isn't losing money.
  18. I don't necessarily believe it which is why I said 'reportedly', but I wouldn't be surprised. When you look at Beeston's 5-year contract limit and his refusal to deal with Boras = a team that's adverse to free-agency.
  19. To be fair, they reportedly offered $75M over 5 years to Anibal Sanchez last off season before they made the Marlins trade. It seems to me "they" didn't want to have the team stink in 2013. There come times in rebuilding phases where you have to be willing to take a step back to take 2 steps forward. I happen to think that this franchise's goal is to provide watchable content for Rogers and having a 90-loss team in 2013 would've meant lower attendance and viewership.
  20. So a well-run organization left it up to luck? What was their payroll going into last year? Unless it was below $120M (arbitrary number), going into the season with so many question marks seems kind of dumb. Anyway...
  21. I also thought age would at least start to catch up to Ortiz. I didn't think Napoli's hip would hold up. I didn't think Lackey would be anywhere as good as he was. Etc, etc. So, I'll shut up
  22. For the record, I think I picked them to go 90-72 last year, so I admit, my evaluations are crap.
  23. You hit the nail on the head and if every team were run like the Rays, A's and Cards, they wouldn't be so special, would they?
