  1. Somewhere Frenchsoup is heartbroken
  2. IKF needs to either out-WAR Chapman or completely bomb. Anything in between is wasted potential for BJMB hilarity
  3. I still kind of think JD Davis makes sense. They'd have to jettison Espinal, but that's fine. Get him out of SF and he'll run unto 20 dingers and a wRC+ over 105. Neither him nor IKF have a platoon split, but they might have different splits vs. different pitcher types or something. Davis starting 4- times a week at 3B with IKF getting the other 2-3 and then coming in as a defensive replacement if the team has the lead might be the best way to squeeze value out of 3B.
  4. 88 wins and a WC spot
  5. Most likely outcome is probably that those signings were just fine in the aggregate, and the team is just fine in 2024. Not great. I think they'd probably like to find someone who's A) worthy of 300m+ of their money, and wants to take it from them. But until that happens, I think these safe short term deals are fine.
  6. It's weird seeing them take so much criticism over their read of the FA market. They're a big budget team that has actually done a very good job spending money. Springer is probably the only underwater contract on the books, but he's still an above average player on the back half of a FA deal that looks like it's going to be a fine signing.
  7. Dodgers just gave Heyward 9M for 1 year and Hernandez 4M. Joe Kelly 8M. Rays gave Phil Maton 6.5M Braves gave Joe Jimenez 3/26 and Reynaldo Lopez 3/30 Orioles have Kimbrel 13M Phillies gave Merrifield 8M Throwing 7.5M x 2 years at a guy they probably think is about league average just isn't a big deal.
  8. Like, the team clearly thinks they're getting a league-average 3B. That's the evaluation that actually matters here, not a couple of million dollars,
  9. But we're still just talking about minor end of roster pieces. If IKF is as good as the team thinks he is (and they almost certainly think he's better than Urshela), nobody will care that he makes 7.5M this year instead of 2 or 4 or whatever. And if he's not, the big mistake will have been turning 3B over to him in the first place, not maybe paying him a few million more than they might have if they had waited longer.
  10. It's a pretty minor misread. I don't know what fair value is for IKF. 2/10? 1/5?
  11. This kind of perfectly tracks with the way the Jays have operated this offseason. I would like to retract my reactionary criticism of Ross Atkins. I no longer think he should be walked out by security. Unless IKF gets 500 PA and puts up under 1.5 WAR.
  12. 3/126 extension for Zack Wheeler
  13. Starting to think Espino might earn a 40-man spot
  14. You’re probably right that they had a strong idea that Chapman was leaving when they sighed IKF. But my point was that, as late as February 2nd, there was a financial ability to give Chapman the deal he got. That didn’t happen, but not because there wasn’t 20M in the 2024 budget. They either preferred Turner straight up to Chapman all things considered, or Chapman was still holding out for a significantly bigger deal than what he got, or just preferred SF on a 1-year deal.
  15. Yimi for Davis - who says no?
  16. But they had clear payroll room for Chapman until February when they signed Turner
  17. He should probably fire Boras
  18. I try bringing up the Orioles game on MLB.tv using the app on my Sony smart TV. Get an error message saying I don't have access even though I get the same game on my laptop with the same account. Call MLB and they tell me MLB.tv no longer supports Sony TVs (what?). Now the game is working fine. Every year I'm amazed at how s***** MLB is to people who are actually willing to pay $210 to watch their games. Lets focus on weekly Apple and Youtube games instead of actually having a streaming service that works.
  19. Neither of us have any ability to change the settings.
  20. I wonder how far apart they were when Turner signed. If there was any interest at all from the team, there must have been a take it or leave it offer in late January.
  21. I’m kind of just waiting on Hurl/admin to say something
  22. They could have just not signed Turner. Or moved Green. Or Kikuchi. Or not signed Yariel Rodriguez. Or not signed Kiermaier. Yimi Garcia makes a third of Chapman's CBT hit. "They signed IKF and thus didn't have the money for Chapman" is way too simplistic. They could easily have had both. They operated all offseason as though they either didn't really want him at any price, or he didn't want to come back. It's been a bad offseason in the aggregate, but pinning all of it on the signing of a guy who makes like 3% of their payroll is silly.
  23. I’m not accepting an L on that post. I don’t think IKF’s salary prevented them from signing Chapman. If they otherwise felt that a deal was workable, salary could have been moved out to accommodate. Either they didn’t want him, or he didn’t want them. Chapman's salary would have been easy to fit right up until early February, when they signed Turner. They likely knew at that point that Chapman wouldn't be returning.
  24. Or Chapman didn’t want to come back
  25. He’ll make almost as much as Chapman this year lmao
