    No. I have no idea what he's going to do, or what shape is body is in and anyone pretending to be confident on either side is fooling themselves. I'm just saying that there are reasons for concern that seem to have depressed his value once already.

    Do they? And when it comes to the health prospectus of a player who just spent a decade+ in their org, and who was moved as a salary dump despite apparent 5-win upside, I value what they think more than just about anyone else.

    I think he gets over $100M, but not by much. And certainly not by enough to think he has big trade value. As for him putting up 4+ wins, nobody knows what caused his issues this year. Is his body just falling apart? Colorado seems to think so.

    A 31-year old HOF talent averaging 98 games a year over the last 4 years, coming off a 100 wRC+ season, and projected at 3.5 wins.

    Unless they knew they could move Reyes, he's basically a wash with the prospects value-wise. This trade was 100% Colorado not wanting to be on the hook for Tulo's contract going forward. Which makes sense, because how many teams would offer him 5/100 this offseason? A couple IMO.

    Contracts exist, and he has a long and very scary injury history. It's the reason why Colorado pretty much gave him away. If they could have had more, they would have traded him for more.

    lol @ Tulo returning Giolito and Turner. He just got traded for a small fraction of that, and the Rockies ate Reyes' contract. They could probably get like Tanner Roark or something.

    The org has gone from Paul Godfrey to Paul Beeston to one of the best baseball minds in the game at team President. This is huge.

    It's amazing how that guy blended in for years, and then literally went insane. He's a legit crazy person now.

    Yes. Granted, my opinion would be different if I were actually on the team and winning baseball games.

    I wouldn't want payroll in the bottom third, but I also find it a lot more fun cheering for a team with actual payroll restrictions. Give me the 10th highest payroll instead of one in the top-3. It's a lot more interesting that way.

    The parallel you drew between the Rios and Escobar situations made it sound like you thought the Rios move was also a loss in value, and that it wasn't fair to criticize AA for the Escobar move but not Ricciardi for the Rios move.

    I pointed it out because there seemed to be some confusion (not just on your end) as to whether or not it made baseball sense to let Rios go. It did. Letting him go was the right choice, because he earned more money than he was worth. That's in contrast to Escobar, who was worth more money than he earned over the course of his contract. I'm not going to guess at how credit/blame should be attributed, but as far as baseball moves go, the Rios decision was correct and the Escobar decision was not.

    I've seen a few people criticize Ricciardi for letting Rios get claimed by the White Sox. After the claim, Rios put up 7.7 fWAR for about $61M. That's about $7.9M/win from 2009-2014. When the FO believed in 2009 that he wouldn't be worth the remainder of his contract, they were right. It wouldn't have been terrible to keep him, but the contract they walked away from was not a good one.
