  1. Would you sign Mark Lowe to a 3/11 contract? I would. And I wouldn't blame management if he bombed.
  2. Am I the only one who had no issue with the Izturis signing? The team had no middle infielders and at the time he was as consistent and reliable as a bench middle infielder could be. $3.33M for a guy who looked like a great bet to provide 0.5-1.5 WAR in a part-time role is not too high a price to pay, and the third year was required to get him. He fell off a cliff at 32 years old, but I don't think it's fair to blame AA for not seeing that coming.
  3. Who said that? I had no idea Jays management knew/cared what a WAR was.
  4. Does anyone actually know what $/WAR we should all be using when we do these stupid things? People throw around anywhere from 7-11.
  5. If you start that exercise using Steamer's current projection (3.5 WAR) the projected surplus goes from 50 to ~20.
  6. So clearing $75M while also picking up 4 years of Grandal is unimpressive because something about unlimited funds, while taking a 1/10 gamble on a guy that anyone would have projected at close to 2 wins was a terrible decision? I'm not exactly following you here.
  7. Entering his age-28 season with a career 1 fWAR/600, and Steamer has him at ~0.6 fWAR/600. I'll say somewhere between 0.5 and 1.
  8. Maicer Izturis falls under the same category for me.
  9. I see that a lot like a saw the Melky signing after year one: a zero-risk gamble on a guy that you would have projected to do well, but that didn't work out. Those are the moves it's ok to whiff on.
  10. Ironically, that's pretty much what I was doing while posting earlier.
  11. As this was happening I thought to myself "GD would do this".
  12. I think a lot of people have probably underrated them a bit. Projections don't really handle defense or elite bullpens as well as we'd like them too, and pythag records wouldn't give them full credit for their pen. I would have said all year that there are probably 5 better teams, but I think I would have been wrong. Ned Yost is dumb though.
  13. http://www.hardballtimes.com/royals-royals/ Very good article about the Royals' FO. It calls it one of the best in the game and suggests that if the Rays or A's had built their teams similarly the nerds would have been a lot quicker to praise them.
  14. I'm posting while working and listening to a podcast. The results are not good.
  15. Holy s***, I'm dumn. Nothing to see here. I was actually sitting here confused at why you weren't making sense.
  16. In favour of Cleveland. Cleveland wins. Toronto loses. Carrasco was clearly worth more than Stroman.
  17. I meant heist in favour of Cleveland. There's a serious gap in value between Carrasco and an injured Stroman.
  18. How can you say that without knowing the +? Obviously Stroman for Carrasco would be a heist for Cleveland, but with enough added it could swing the other way.
  19. Wow, Shapiro pushing all the right buttons. Four great moves.
  20. Remains to be seen, but that will probably end well for him.
  21. Tsuyoshi Wada back to Japan. I always thought he could have been a good back-end starter but he never really caught a break.
  22. I remember when people said that about Friedman, then he crushed it last year in LA. If you have smart people making decisions, they're not going to turn into mouth-breathing idiots when given more resources to work with. They'll take more risks, and the failures will be bigger (see: Brandon McCarthy signing, maybe), but there's no reason to think they'll just abandon the skills that made them effective on a smaller budget.
