I don't think we can say that the defensive downgrade from Pillar to Pompey isn't much. Pillar is like a 70-80 grade defensive CF right now.

I really like it too. Upton looks somewhere in the vicinity of league average offensively, can run, is a plus defender on the corners, and can fake it in CF without embarrassing himself. That makes him a perfect 4th OF, who can probably approach 2 wins if forced to play full time. At 5M, and a prospect worth probably another few hundred grand, that's a nice addition this year, but especially next year when Pillar is currently the only OF under team control.

Has his stock improved this year? Wasn't in the MLB offseason top 30, or Sickels top 20. I guess FG had him 20th. But the point remains, the value of a guy like this is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Not a loss.

I don't understand why you seem to expect that a guy who's put up 3 fWAR over 600 PA the last two years is going to come with no investment. 5M and a guy who wouldn't likely be in most people's team top-30 prospects is a very small price to pay for someone who has looked like a league average player for two years now.

I wonder if it's realistic that Bautista sees almost all of his time down the stretch at DH. It's pretty obviously the best configuration going forward. Smoak looks... completely superfluous. That extension was so bizarre. He doesn't even have a role on the team.

This is a really nice addition to have made before the offseason. The 2017 OF is Pillar and then nothing. Nice to get a second MLB quality OF in the fold, especially for 5M or whatever.
