Kind of hard to credit the team for developing players that they didn't actually think were good.

I don't think that doubling down on a guy who gets all of his value from outfield defense is a good idea. These guys don't usually age well. It's one thing to hold on to Pillar until his legs start to go, but trading a Sanchez or Stroman for another Pillar so we can park him in the corner OF is probably not the best use of resources.

I'd say his FA track record was mixed. Sandoval and Ramirez aren't great, and Castillo is a bust. But prior to their WS title he signed Ross, Uehara, Victorino, Napoli, Dempster, Gomes etc... to smart short term deals and they made all the difference. Not sure why he got away from that type of move in favour of the splashy high-risk signing, especially after having so much success with the smaller deal.

To be clear, I don't think either should have been traded. I wouldn't have traded either. I just think the idea that they would have declined a trade to be absurd.

That's silly. They both had significant financial incentive for accepting a trade, possibly as much as $10+M. Rejecting a trade would have been incredibly stupid.

There's really no downside to having the DL+ though, as long as your league comes with weekly transaction limits. At least give the option.
