I think your lead-off hitter should be one of the 3 best hitters on the team. I don't think it's likely that McKinney gets to the point where he's a top-3 hitter on a good team, but if he does, I wouldn't have a problem with him hitting first.
I guess I still don't really understand what makes him a true lead off hitter in your eyes. You mentioned high OBP contact hitter with low Ks and speed. He doesn't really check any of those boxes: he's projected at a ~0.315 OBP with a 23% K-rate and has 40-50 grade speed and probably won't steal 5 bags a season or provide any other value on the bases. His skill set looks similar to that of Scott Schebler or Mark Trumbo. He looks nothing like Brett Gardner.
McKinney seems like a very different kind of hitter than the Ben Revere speedster. He’s going to hit for a low average and hope a 10% Walk rate and above average power drives his offence. And he might have below-average speed. He’s not a base stealing threat at all.
The best teams in the league consistently hit one of their best 2 or 3 hitters in the leadoff spot now. How many good teams have a slap-hitting speedster hitting first consistently?
As long as the vets being pushed out are not better players than the young guys taking their place, I just don't see this as a problem. Players will not see a smaller percentage of revenues overall.
Teams will only do this if their young players are on par skill-wise with the veterans whose spots they'd be taking. And if not, teams willing to buy a Mike Moustakas for 1/10 instead of having a replacement-level 20-year old take the spot will be rewarded in the standings.
I'm hoping Shapiro is here long enough for the team to become a contender, so Ross Atkins builds enough clout to take over as president should Shapiro decide to leave.
Why eat like $17m instead of just keeping him with the org for $20m? He can pass knowledge on to Jansen next year, catch the odd game, and then transition to another role with the org after the season.
I think there's a big difference in public support for delaying service time to save a year of control vs. to avoid super 2. I'm cool with them waiting to mid-April to get the extra year, but waiting until June to save a few million a year would be indefensibly cheap in my eyes.
I wonder how receptive Martin would be to a super utility role that sees him play 5-6 spots on the diamond, but rarely catching unless Jansen or Maile are hurt.
He could put up huge numbers in relief as soon as next year. Dude has the stuff and command to start, but can't seem to handle the workload. If the stuff plays up in relief, while also helping him stay healthy, that's a great asset.
Every time someone posts a quote from Gibby it sounds like he's not really interested in coming back. I really hope that's what's going on, and that he's not being forced out.

Jump right to the comments for some prime second-hand embarrassment.
It looks like he has more power than Upton, and strikes out less. Maybe less speed and worse defense. But overall, a Justin Upton level of impact seems reasonable.
I don't think a trade is necessary if Solarte is bought out. Drury, Travis, and Gurriel all have options. They can make it work, even if Tulo is healthy.
