    Gonna go out on a limb here and assume he meant he likes Smoak more than your typical 'low cost' waiver-wire claim.

    Yeah, I didn't word that properly. I meant that there are a lot of positions filled with very bad players, and there just aren't a lot of resources available for big additions.

    Why do you care so much? Is it a fear thing? Like if you can explain it away as being his fault, the random death of a young guy isn't so scary?

    I don't even understand why anyone cares if he was drinking at this point. Both people in the car are dead. Nobody else was involved. Leave his family alone.

    I see an ageing player who's never been able to run or defend and might be a bit above average offensively vs. LHP, but probably not enough to overcome the fact that he can't do anything else.

    It's just hard to see where the wins are going to be added. As things currently stand, we have something like: C - replacement level 2B - replacement level LF - replacement level CF - Gose/Pillar platoon (maybe average, but high risk) Bench Mayberry - replacement level Smoak - replacement level Thole - replaclement level Valencia/Francisco - maybe 1 win Subtract another ~1.5 win bat from the lineup in the likely event that Lind is moved for a reliever and Smoak is his replacement. That's just a lot of bad players.

    Yeah. It's hard to believe he's actually going to be on the team. I'm waiting until he actually gets tendered before getting pissed.

    I'm a bit worried that Tim Hudson will choose to retire on top if he pitches SF to a WS win tonight.

    So are any two other pitchers more similar than Mark Buehrle and Jason Vargas? I guess they beat their DIPS in different ways (Buehrle with his defense and Vargas with a big park and elite defensive OF), but still.

    It's more the opportunity cost that concerns me. If they like Smoak as part of their 25-man, that's a roster spot that's not going to be filled by someone better than Smoak. Giving playing time to very probable replacement level talent is a big part of why this team has been bad in the last two seasons. Nothing to worry about yet, but him being on the opening day roster is not a positive thing at all.

    Guys, Smoak is a 28-year old 1B-only bat who has a career 94 wRC+ over 2200+ PA and doesn't even play good defense. He isn't a major league player.
