  1. I suspect AA is a little scared regarding signing someone at second after seeing Izzy (who was an above average defender prior to last year) flop so badly, and Boni be completely useless (he certainly was never going to be a wizard, but I don't think anyone thought he'd be quite as bad as he was). I can understand Goins being somewhat appealing to him under that scenario. I think if we see anyone come in to fill that hole, it'll be a young guy who doesn't hurt the payroll if he has trouble adjusting. I agree that Drew seems unlikely, but would be an interesting choice. Ellis at his age probably didn't want to deal with the turf, although who knows for sure.

Heh, Rask just got beat by a knuckle-puck from center ice. Man did that sucker drop.
  3. The long shot part is definitely intriguing. I get a sense though that it isn't Samardzija, but rather involves a series of trades that juggle a number of current roster players. Samardzija may very well be one of the other 3.
  4. Buehrle is only 34 right now (he just seems older), and Dickey is less concerning as a knuckleballer. We really only need 1 more guy we can count on for 200 innings. 2 would be nice, but with the prices this offseason I don't think it'll happen. One is essential. We don't have to surrender the 11th pick.
  5. He's not trying to get ALL 3 or 4. He has 3 or 4 targets via trade.
  6. Yikes at Pelfrey getting 2/11 PLUS bonuses.
  7. It's not an excuse for free agents looking for a long term deal, but it's absolutely one for guys looking to rebuild their value.
  8. It doesn't mean Floyd was interested in us. Really, any pitcher trying to build their value would be nuts to come to Toronto (or anywhere in the AL East). There should be some appeal to hitters though, especially once we finally eliminate the turf.
  9. It seems they don't view him as a starter, since they have been fairly clear in saying that the current plan is for Goins to start and Izzy to be a super utility guy. Now THAT we can (and have) picked apart for days. As for AA not being linked by the media to the 2B options, I don't really care. I DO care whether or not he is pursuing them behind the scenes.
  10. You could argue that it takes the league a certain amount of time to determine a player's strengths and weaknesses, and exploit them. The player then in turn also needs to adjust. After a time, you should reach a relative steady state representing the player's true level (probably overlapping with skill erosion). I would suspect that a lot of the early decline is due to this, with later decline due more to aging. This is why I would like to see a similar study relating to service time rather than age, and see if it produces the same approximate results. I don't know if I'm right or not, just thinking out loud.
  11. Izzy was not a bad signing overall (at the time). Sure the term could have been shorter, but if he was available this off-season (without last season having occurred) he probably would have been getting 5+ M. No one could have predicted he'd have one of the worst seasons in history.
  12. I don't think we can blame AA about Fister. He seemed just as frustrated as we are when asked about it. Infante is anyone's guess (maybe he didn't want to play here no matter what), but he turned down a higher AAV from the Yankees too it seems. Regardless, there appears to be lots of available 2nd baseman via trade that should be able to provide similar production to Infante at a much cheaper price. Provided we don't give up a top prospect or major current piece of the roster, that may be a preferable way to go anyhow.
  13. It IS possible that he doesn't want to play in New York too, or perhaps he has family in KC or something.
  14. Time until BTS changes his avatar to the Cards ... 3 ... 2 ... 1
  15. Normal recovery period seems to be ~ 1 year now, sometimes slightly less. There'd be an outside chance he'd be ready coming out of spring. If not, Dustin could start for a month or so, then switch to the pen.
  16. Yeah, actually after taking another look at the numbers, this could be a great move if the price is only a few million.
  17. If our depth was like it was last year, I'd love it. I question whether he'd really outperform our house options next year though.
  18. I agree. Just watch though, somehow he'll put up .900 OPS and get traded for a haul, then regress back to normal.
  19. Assuming no major injury or drop off a cliff, you have to figure Trout will get a minimum of 10/300 4 years from now. However, even if it was only 10/250, under my scenario you'd be paying 10/150 for the other 10 years (4 on the front end and 6 on the back end). When you figure in inflation, that would seem to potentially be well under market value. If it's closer to 10/100 for the other 10 years, then it's a steal.
  20. If I'm Halladay, I think I look to stay in reasonable shape and go on the weighted ball program. Take a full year away, then come into spring next year and see where things stand. If the velocity still isn't there, it isn't there. Maybe the time away and strengthening finish off the surgery rehab though.
  21. I wonder what Trout would do if they offered him 400/20 right now? Could either side actually say no?
  22. That would only be 20M / year. I'd say that would be on the low end, although as he ages he'll lose some of the defense and speed value you'd think.
  23. Definitely tampering, although I suspect it wasn't intentional. He should have just said something about an elite 26 year old (like Trout will be when FA hits).
  24. Tell ju1ced to turn on html code and we can have some real fun
  25. Interesting. I'd love to see one of these studies done with number of games played rather than age though, and see how the curves compare (would give an interesting look at pitcher/hitter adjustments in relation to decline as well)
