    Teams run in to both good and bad luck. Last year almost anything that could go wrong for us, did. That doesn't mean the talent on the team would project to last place this year with average luck. Opposite with the O's 2 years ago. They had incredibly good luck, but they weren't a 2nd place talent. This year they finished 4th. You can't just point to the standings and assume that even with no changes to a roster, they'd look anything close to the same the next year.

    Yeah, this scares the crap out of me (although until that haul starts impacting at the major league level it'll be nice having Price outside the division).

    Don't forget Drabek either! I'm actually really excited to see if he can continue his approach from last year. If so, I might put him as the first callup.

    If they do sign them, They certainly could help us fill our second base hole. Actually I wouldn't mind taking a flier on Smoak either.

    Whoever came up with that did a good job. I don't have a problem with players doing that, but I suspect the success rate is extremely low.

    I'm fine with running the valuations (and they should be run), I just don't believe it's proper to evaluate a trade solely based on surplus value.

    Not to mention that it's not all about surplus value, nor are things like increased revenue from attendance and tv factored in (difference between making the playoffs and missing for example). I'm not saying surplus value isn't important, but actual performance during a window of contention is as well.

    IF Cano really is the age he says he is, and IF the Mariners front load the contract heavily enough (and they certainly appear to have the financial ability to front load it), it might not be terrible for them.

    Tampa did it as part of the cost of getting another asset. The Oakland deal imo is still a questionable one.

    What on earth is up with the Dodgers signing expensive relievers?

    The guy in that scenario would play worse at the premium positions than he would at the non-premium ones (almost certainly), which would more than negate the positional bonus.

    There are definitely some issues with it imo (shifts being one of the bigger ones), but we don't yet have the data collection to necessarily fix the issues. It's a huge improvement over straight scouting.

    Possibly, but I think Seattle IS dumb enough to do it, and the Yankees may very well decide they can't come close to the offer and sign someone else.

    Yeah, it's called lack of cash. In all seriousness though, if Seattle manages to score Cano they are going to have a bit of a surplus on the infield. Someone like Ackley or Franklin should become available to help with the 2B situation. Ruggiano would make a nice backup outfielder and platoon partner with Lind.

    Cool! You should add a section that gives what the win increases would be for the Jays specifically with a few of the free agents and rumored trade targets (like shark)

    If I remember right, earlier drafts said something about a fine if no agreement is reached.

    They could change it up a bit and have a lottery with the max bidding teams. Lower placed teams in the standings get higher chance, but everyone has a reasonable chance.

    That is interesting. We know that AA wants someone who can make 30+ starts and doesn't have injury questions. Shark pretty much has to be one. Assuming Iwakuma is out of play (we know AA likes him), maybe Lynn or Chacin, or even Gio. Never know if the Giants are having second thoughts about Cain either.

    It would probably be the equivalent of saying that the third baseman blowing at the ball as it travels to the plate would cause it to move more horizontally.

    The difference in gravity between the two release points is so small you probably couldn't input it on a calculator. To give you an idea, the acceleration due to gravity at Coors field is about 9.798 m/s2, and at Yankee Stadium is about 9.802 m/s2. Coors field is ~1300 meters higher in elevation. The difference between a 7' pitcher and a 6' pitcher is 0.3 meters (plus possibly some additional arm length). It's not worth even considering.

    The difference in gravity due to height really has nothing to do with it (in fact it would have the opposite effect, in that the taller pitcher's pitches would have very slightly less pull on them, although this is far too small a difference to consider). It simply has to do with the angle that the ball is released at. A taller pitcher (usually) releases the ball at a higher point, and therefore the ball has to travel downward at a sharper angle in order to cross the plate in the strike zone.

    For the blog, having it worded and structured well is very important to add legitimacy to it. They are trying to help, not be asses. If I decide to write a few pieces for the blog in the future, I know I'd appreciate someone pointing out those kind of mistakes.

    That's correct. He basically exceeded his numbers in the minors (some of which was inflated by a .392 babip in Vegas) at the major league level on both offense and defense. I expect the league to adapt to him, as well as his numbers across the board to regress. Most players who come onto the major league stage with the kind of impact Gomes did seem to struggle the next year a bit. I'd still take him back in a heartbeat over anyone we have.
