  1. Well it seems like almost every GM overvalues relief pitching (at least AA is overvaluing it with cheaper guys that have great stuff), and AA appears to be paying more attention to defensive metrics this off-season (he might have swung too far in the other direction). I agree with the platoon splits. I really don't know what to make of it overall. I suspect if all the guys on this board with higher end statistical knowledge were to put together a series of reports that were really thorough and well polished, we could shift him back towards the stats end of things.
  2. Well, I think it was implied that he had moved away from them well before he became GM, not after. AA lying about something also seems completely out of character, as he seems to go out of his way not to. Jack Z just seems like an ass.
  3. Apparently when AA first started in baseball, he was heavily into stats. Something unknown slowly changed his mind, and he went completely in the opposite direction. It appears to me that he's now heading back in the stats direction, albeit not as quickly as we'd like. It seems he IS valuing OBP more now, judging by the hiring of Seitzer. Of course, he also seems happy with Goins at second, so take that as you will.
  4. If you have a longer term owner proven in the past to pony up on the payroll, I think it makes it easier to do a total rebuild as the fans can have confidence that the money will be there when the team is ready. Any time an owner comes in and immediately rebuilds though it's got to make it more questionable.
  5. Seeing the prices this off-season, getting Ethier ourselves might not be the worst idea in the world - especially if we could send Romero along with something minor in return.
  6. The ONLY scenario I could see where it would be worth while giving up someone like Janssen for Barney would be to platoon Goins and Barney (which might actually have some merit). Otherwise I have to believe he could bring back an MLB ready prospect (either at 2nd or outfield) that would be better for us long term. That said, I would give up Sanchez and Janssen for Shark by himself.
  7. I recall there being reports that they were seriously considering just releasing him. Waivers would have been part of the process I'd assume.
  8. Yeah, I think I agree with that, and it appears that AA does now too. I'd probably say closer to 2 years before though as opposed to 1.
  9. I'm 99% sure that was ordered by Rogers. I don't blame AA for dumping Escobar at all unless we were to find out it was his idea to do so (which I highly doubt)
  10. Being a pitcher shouldn't be a warning flag for a team friendly deal. He signed it at the end of 2010, so it was probably closer to 2 K/BB, but that might be the only somewhat worrying sign. Romero was simply a situation that didn't work out (it happens), but imo it really WAS a good deal at the time.
  11. What were Romero's warning flags at the time?
  12. Romero was a good extension at the time too. It's unfortunate it didn't work out.
  13. This is my biggest issue with him as well
  14. Which leads to the question of whether they consistently make them because they HAVE to operate that way making it hard for them to make a bad one, or if they would continue to do so even with a normal budget. Mozeliak imo has to be considered right alongside them because he IS doing it with a bigger budget, although I think it's fair to point out that if his Hail Mary in the Rasmus trade hadn't (somehow) worked, that one could have been a truly horrendous mistake.
  15. I'm not sure how he has more bat, and I'd probably rate the gloves as being equal. I don't think he's an upgrade at all.
  16. I don't see the cocky part at all. When he took the job, he surrounded himself with as many baseball people as he could because he knew he didn't have enough experience to have all the answers. By all accounts, he values differing points of view on his staff. He seems to be extremely respectful of the other GM's (probably to a fault). JPR on the other hand, was cocky. Maybe it comes with being a JP He's made some trades on both ends of the spectrum, so he doesn't need to try to even anything up.
  17. I think someone got into the rum and eggnog lol. I'm all for trading Janssen, but we already have an all glove, no bat guy manning second. We don't need to trade for a another.
  18. Sums it up pretty nicely, although I think Choo will be playable in the outfield longer term than 2 years (unless they decided for some reason to plop him in center).
  19. I think he's above average personally, and I think will further improve (until he takes over for Beeston, at which point we will have to break in a new GM all over again).
  20. You have to wonder if some of the bigger market owners see what Oakland and the Rays do by necessity, and get caught up with thinking about all the money they can make (not to mention all they rake in during the low payroll times of the actual rebuild where payroll is less than they get in revenue sharing before selling any tv rights or seats). Then when they see the fan support start to dwindle, they panic and force the GM to win now at all expense. Rinse and repeat.
  21. Yeah, I agree. I really am in favor of trading Rasmus this off-season.
  22. Unless I'm reading it wrong, it doesn't fit with the rest of his statement. I think his phone is screwing up the columns on Fangraphs. edited to say: Never mind, I think I see what he's saying now. Very confusing, but the misunderstanding was on my end.
  23. If you think Lee hasn't had 4 WAR in a season since 2006, either Fangraphs isn't working well on your phone or you're getting the xFIP column confused with the WAR column.
  24. We are talking about Cliff Lee, right? 2008: 7.1 WAR 2009: 6.5 WAR 2010: 7.0 WAR 2011: 6.5 WAR 2012: 4.9 WAR 2013: 5.1 WAR
  25. According to fangraphs, Rasmus is projected at 3.3 WAR next year (on both), and Lee is 3.8 (steamer) and 4.2 (oliver)
