I was meaning more in general with some of the rumors we've heard recently as opposed to Sanchez specifically. It's possible both sides are correct.

It's quite possible they had verbal exchanges in which they suggested they would give him that, but never made a formal written offer.

This is the sort of argument that MLBAM should help resolve in the future. We'll be able to determine (at least to a much higher degree than we can now) how much luck really plays into some results. I suspect reality is somewhere in the middle of xFIP and ERA for JJ last year.

In hindsight he definitely should have been qualified, but most of us were at least somewhat on the fence about it at the time. I'm actually not entirely sure he would have accepted.

I'm not convinced he does want to. Part of me suspects this is his agent trying to make a splash after leaving the other agency and put one over on teams. Watch him sign in a pitching friendly park after all this.

Law has a few articles up with Jays related content (and other interesting things). Not all of us saw the games, so some highlights from Law's notes: He starts out drooling over Buxton. Seems to like what he saw from Hutch, but thinks his stuff isn't all the way back yet (although close). Slider wasn't sharp in the outing he saw, but was impressed with Hutch's delivery. Drabek was a disaster, throwing mid to upper 80's with no command and a sloppy curve. Lawrie over-rotating at the plate which is sapping his power. (Law also says something about Lawrie being poor defensively so he had better hit well, so his observations may be a little suspect) Regarding Stroman, said there's no question about his ability to be a starter or his durability, only question is whether he can keep the ball down. Feels he may need to sacrifice some velocity to ensure a more consistent downhill plane, but if he can he'll be at least a legit mid-rotation guy.

The reason is because starters generally are more valuable and have a bigger impact on the club than relievers do. Only 2 relievers put up more than 2.5 WAR last year, not to mention they're MUCH cheaper and easier to find in general. Pretty much all pitchers benefit from coming out of the pen in terms of stuff, so the question becomes whether he can out-perform others in deserving a rotation spot as opposed to whether his numbers would improve in the pen. The plane IS a disadvantage, but his total package in stuff and how he uses it is what matters. Some guys are at a disadvantage in velocity, some height, etc. I guess it comes down to this: Which pitcher would you prefer, one who's 5'9 and throws 95 or one who's 6'4 and throws 90? The answer should be whichever one performs best.

Yeah, that's basically what I'm trying to say. Plane, movement, deception, etc really are part of "stuff". He either has it or he doesn't, and all signs point to him having it. The only real worry imo regarding his height is durability. So far it doesn't appear to be an issue, and even if it does later on in life he can move to the pen when it occurs. Even guys like Tom Gordon who did eventually move to the pen put up good seasons as a starter first (and Gordon didn't have Stroman's command).

You're completely missing my point. How many closers (or other major league relievers period) have been 5'9 or less since 1960 and pitched more than say 50 relief appearances? I don't know the answer, but it probably totals less than 10 or 15 - it'll be 'small' whatever it is. Does that mean he shouldn't be a pitcher at all because almost no one else that size is, even if he has lights out stuff? Sure a taller pitcher has an advantage with all else being equal (all else almost never is), but the only thing that matters at the MLB level is ability and results. No reason not the treat him as a starter until (if) he proves he can't handle it, which is the same for any pitcher regardless of size. My point on Abbott was suggesting limitations on physical attributes. It has nothing to do with Abbott's size.

What matters is stuff, not physical size etc. Would you say someone with great stuff should never be given a chance to pitch because they only have one hand, and only (to my knowledge) one person has ever done that? There's always people in life that are exceptions. It's stupid to never take advantage of those opportunities because of preconceived notions. BTW, how many closers have there been 5'9 or shorter? If the answer is also 2, does that mean he shouldn't be a closer either?

It's still a good ballpark to pitch in even if it is neutral (one year of data since moving the fences in probably isn't enough to tell - it is one year since they did, isn't it?). Also, the retractable roof and good climate add to the benefit.

How many times have you gotten wasted and LOST your wallet at the bar or in a fight? Is it a zero-sum game?

It almost feels like both teams (Jays and O's) are being played by his agent. He finally decides on a 1 year deal, so spew out a bunch of nonsense to target two teams with a need and cash to set the market, then choose a team with a good ballpark to pitch in once the bar is raised (*cough* Seattle).

Dunno, maybe. Multiple places seeming to indicate that it's not too serious (although initial diagnosis aren't all that accurate).

Initial diagnosis is a mild forearm strain.

Gameday pitch counts aren't accurate for spring training (unless they've changed something recently). An out is 1 strike, a strikeout is 3 strikes, and a walk is 4 balls. I think the first pitch is also counted, along with plays (WP, SB, etc). Other than that, nothing counts.

I see your point. Yeah, the old formulas may be tweakable for previous seasons, but the flaws will remain (just may not dominate as much).
