    Yimi got demoted (which is odd given his 2.85 xFIP and a team that's saber friendly), Liberatore has given up 10 runs in his last 12 innings, and is starting to have command issues, Nicasio has his own command issues, and it's questionable if he's actually any good. Howell is okay, but very lucky so far this year. Peralta has been a disaster. IMO if the Phillies are interested in Hamels, and Puig is going the other way, then those two guys make the most sense to be included. The Phillies aren't going to want to part with extra prospects when dealing Hamels.

    They've also used 18 different relievers this year (the same number we have incidentally), and their 2nd best reliever in xFIP (who's thrown more than 7 innings) just got demoted for giving up 6 runs in his last couple outings. I think it's safe to say they aren't comfortable with their relief. Also, Jansen kind of skews things a little, with his godly 1.12 xFIP.

    Their pen currently consists of Baez, Howell, Jansen, Liberator, Nicasio, Peralta, and Tsao. I'd have to think replacing Peralta and someone with two very high end relief arms (which would give them a pen that could probably rival SD) would be pretty tempting for them.

    I doubt they would straight up, but a couple reports have Puig causing some clubhouse issues. I wouldn't be surprised to see a trade involving Puig and Hamels. Maybe something like Puig for Hamels, Papelbon, and Gilies, with the Phillies paying Papelbon's salary next season?

    ESPN.com has it under their Expanded II Pitching Stats. You could also just download a spreadsheet of the players from Fangraphs and calculate it in Excel.

    Yeah, I agree. The comments seemed to be pretty set before. I'd also say it means they probably aren't looking to pick up someone like Papelbon (which I'm happy about given his contract).

    I think Zobrist's defensive decline is primarily due to his knee injury in April. It'll probably improve over the next few months.

    It's sss, but this year he's actually hit righties slightly better. Maybe he'll regress, or maybe the reports on him working really hard to specifically improve his approach vs righties is paying off. Time will tell.

    Don't forget Ivan Rodriguez either. He probably doesn't edge either of those guys out, but I think he belongs in the same discussion.

    It could be worse, they could be the Mariners. You know, a team full of 1st baseman and DH's.

    Griffey has 630 career home runs, just shy of 3k career hits, was a great defender up until the last few years of his career, and put up 77.7 WAR. I'm not sure how he could be significantly overrated. I don't think Jeter deserves most of the crap he gets around here either. He shouldn't have won some of the GG he did, and he should have been moved off SS a number of years ago. I'm not sure you can blame him for either of those things though.

    I saw an article yesterday that said Shields is being actively shopped around.

    It didn't stop them from using him as their primary catcher from 2008 to 2010, and he may be one of the only available options they could pick up that wouldn't cost them something they would hate parting with. His framing numbers also probably improve considerably with them, since most of their pitchers have excellent command. It's tough to frame pitches when you have no freaking idea where they're going to be thrown.

    Actually a Navarro for Dejesus swap could make some sense. Rene Rivera's bat might be worse than Zunino's, and the Rays have the outfield depth for it to make sense for them. Both players are on expiring contracts.

    I'm not even sure what a fit would be if Seattle is looking to add, unless they sent Happ back our way again for him. That's about the only thing I can see that would make any kind of sense in that scenario. If Seattle falls out of it, Austin Jackson could be somewhat interesting as a short term fix for us in the field though.

    They're 7.5 games out and have a terrible offense AND terrible defense. Would Navarro help a little with the offense, sure, but they still don't sniff the playoffs with him imo. I highly doubt they'd have interest, barring a fluky winning streak prior to the deadline (and frankly they could probably easily get Navarro without giving up Iwakuma if that was the case).

    If the Mariners are trading Iwakuma, it's because they're out of the race. They'd have no motivation to take another player who's a rental in return. I DO like the idea of getting Iwakuma though, and I think he should be available without giving up one of our elite prospects.

    No, I'm making an observation. If he IS sick and playing like this, Gibbons should have lifted him. I just thought is was interesting. I can't recall ever seeing him sweat like that before.

    Reyes is sweating like crazy out there. Considering he should be used to the heat, I'm wondering if he may be sick. Would explain a lot (today at least).
