it has it's huge downside in the future, and might handcuff the team a bit, but it's hardly the worst thing they could do. I can't believe how many Jays shirts are still being worn as I walk around outside. Signing a player long term to chase a 2016 playoff run is short-sighted and could be dumb if they have zero salary increase commitment from ownership. But a Price signing early in the process probably sells twice as many season tickets as the Marlin and Mets trades did. Not to mention Price improves the team by a lot in 2016.
I don't advocate a Price or any long term pitcher signing (at market value), and it doesn't seem to be a Shapiro thing to do but I would understand it if happens. Also, with Opt-Outs and trades the only players that seem to go to full term in FA contracts are the busts and the ones that sign with teams and have prolonged success.
