Yeah.  So not exactly a clear solution here.  

Quite honestly if Jays went to some crazy piggy back system.  Cease, Soriano, Yesavage, Ponce, Miles, Perry, Tiederman, King, Stanifer, Spaghetti it would be interesting. 

Off and on over the years teams have toyed with this but never seen it through.  f*** it. 

Tell the boys they aren't built to throw 98 for 200 innings and they are throwing 130 or so.   And the boys with mediocre stuff aren't built to face good hitters 3 times.  

End the concept of 'starter' just pitch guys, keep them thowing 98, avoid 5th inning implosions.

This team did give us some hope at the end of August and into the beginning of September, but once the easier part of the schedule arrived this month, they really blew the opportunity. Still, something about this team just never felt right. For me, this was probably the most frustrating team to watch during the Atkins era. even more frustrating than the 2023 and 2024 teams.

Offense has to be the main priority this offseason. They need another impact bat, ideally up the middle at second base. You simply can’t go into next season with both Gimenez and Clement as everyday starters in the same lineup. I said before this season that Clement is better suited as a super-utility player who can still find his way to around 400 ABs by moving around the diamond. Bo or Jazz would be my main targets at 2B.

They also need a DH to replace Springer. As much as I love George, I think it’s time to move on. Ideally, whoever they bring in at DH should also be capable of playing 40–50 games at another position, preferably in the outfield. Lineup flexibility matters.

As for Santander, I wouldn’t head into Spring Training expecting anything from him. I’d still target another bat, and if Santander comes back healthy and contributes, great. They’ll find ways to work him into the lineup, and injuries always create opportunities over the course of a season.

I also think they may have found their centre fielder for next season and hopefully beyond in Bateman. He’s done more than enough, in my opinion, to enter next year with the CF job.

In left field, I’m fine running another platoon. You can bring Lukes back and find a right-handed bat to pair with him. Ideally, that player would also be capable of playing all three outfield spots.

I really don’t want to see Straw as part of that platoon. At most, keep him around as a fifth outfielder and defensive replacement, but at $5 million, that’s a lot of money for a fifth outfielder with very little offensive value.

I take Straw back at 5 for sure. But his option is for 8

Reasons:

A) he has as solid a floor as anyone on the team given his speed and D

B) he doesn't make mental mistakes and virtually never makes you shake your head and wonder wtf he was thinking.

C) 6.25 million is nothing for the Jays. Cleveland is on the hook for his 1.75m buyout anyways, so even if they did want him back they could decline the option, get Cleveland to cut a check for that, then re-sign him at 6.25 and he still gets the same total money as his option year salary would have been if it was picked up. DO the same thing anyways and if he signs for 4 or 5 instead.... cool.  Or do the buyout thing and give him 2/10 or 2/12

D) can still play everyday for a few weeks if the injury bug hits and not be an embarrassment because of A and B. 

 

In a vacuum... sure, anything above 3 or 4m is an overpay but the strengths of having big payroll is not just signing superstars, or extending your own guys, it's also being able to spend the extra 2 or 3m to get the best floor guys on your squad when you need them too.

They'll talk to him about a non-tender, re-acquisition if they want no doubt 4-5M tops.

Can't do a non-tender when a club option with buyout is already agreed to in his contract.

Either way he gets paid and they can re-negotiate this off-season. They have till November to decide.
