They should put up similar power numbers - Teo has a bit more OBP, but Santander is cheaper and also a switch hitter who hits the same from both sides. Fills a bigger need for our lineup. Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2025 Posted January 21, 2025 A day later and I'm loving the signing even more, the contract was a friggin steal man. We just paid KK 10.5M last season and are paying Santandar 14M per season. I love to crap on Shatkins as much as anyone but I will fight you if you don't like this deal lol. L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2025 Posted January 21, 2025 I don’t get the media hate on this signing I was on the don’t sign Anthony bus because I thought it would end up like 5/125 But at 14M AAV how can you actually be critical of this? Like where are these guys criticizing the Dodgers paying Tanner Scott almost 20M/year ? Stangstag, Terminator, BatFlip and 7 others 10

Olney is saying that if Vlad isn't signed to a long term extension then the Santander deal somehow becomes regrettable regardless of how he actually performs on the field. If the team struggles and Santander is a potent middle of the order bat the team would have little difficulty in moving him to a different team, there just wouldn't likely be much if any prospect capital coming back in return. If Santander struggles on a bad team he's not paid an exorbitant amount by any means, and if the team is blown up in the meantime Rogers can simply absorb the cost with ease as there is very little long term money on the books past the next few seasons. There really isn't a lot of potential downside here as Santander is basically being paid DH money despite still likely being able to man an actual position for the next few seasons. Yeah after all the "Jays are silver medalists" takes they already had a pre-canned "the Jays are panicking" take lined up and were going to use it no matter what. Even if Santander signed for HALF of what many in the media predicted.

We add a decent starter and I'm drinking the kool-aid to do damage next year. I'm not. Hearing Cubs are in on Alonso. And Red Sox and Tigers in on Bregman.

Alonso makes sense for the Cubs. I don't know how much this will matter but keep in mind that those idiots exceeded the luxury tax threshold by a whopping $570k last year. That designates them as a CBT payor, and since they have yet to sign a QO free agent, they will have to forfeit their 2nd and 5th round picks as well as $1M in international money if they sign Alonso . The Jays barely got under the CBT threshold so we aren't a CBT payor. And since we signed Santander already (giving up our 2nd and $500k in Intl Money), we would merely have to forfeit a 3rd rounder if we sign Alonso. Maybe that gives us a leg up? Probably so if Alonso is looking for something short term. Hard to see the Cubs outbidding us for one year of Alonso when they also have to give up a 2nd, 5th and the intl money. As for the Red Sux and the Tigers,: -the Red Sox are a normal team like us. They haven't signed a QO FA yet so they have to give up a 2nd and $500k in Intl Money. -I can't tell if the Tigers are revenue sharing recipients or not. Those *******s doled out a gazillion dollars to Miguel Cabrera so I sure hope not but I think they are. If not they are in the same boat as the Sox, if they are a recipient they have to forfeit a 3rd rounder.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted January 22, 2025 Posted January 22, 2025 He has been saying the right things up until now and it’s so or don’t time so I think given what the front office has done and what they will offer, I think he will stay as long as they pay him like he would get paid in free agency. The time for discount has passed and we are not exactly a franchise strapped for cash. Spanky99 1

I think it will get done too but it will happen right before the stated deadline in February or whatever it is. Like you said in your other post, the Jays obviously have the cash and he's the one star player who will seemingly take their money. Both sides are going to posture back and forth but Vlad will budge a little and get 90% of what he wants. I'm just hoping he does the right thing and takes shitloads of deferrals. Vlad sees what Santander signed for after weeks of negotiations, and Bregman still without a Contract. I expect Vlad does not want to go through the FA wringer. Unless he wants to leave the Jays, which is certainly possible, he will sign a somewhat competitive offer from the Jays. 10/360 with deferrals and opt outs? Stangstag 1
