Three Teams Have Emerged As Serious Suitors for Alex Bregman: Tigers, Red Sox, and Blue Jays

Ari Alexander of the Houston-based NBC affiliate KPRC2, has reported that three teams appear to be in on the former Astros third baseman: the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays.

The Tigers are looking to spend and compete after a surprise postseason run in 2024 while the Red Sox have toyed with the idea of moving Rafael Devers off third base where his glove can be problematic. The Jays could use both Bregman's steady glove and solid power at the hot corner. It's always concerning to see a power righty come out of Houston given that the Crawford boxes are easy exploits for pull hitters. It turns out, Bregman actually hit slightly more career home runs on the road than he did at Minute Maid.

Just another aimless report from some nobody who needs to create content to get paid. People use this stuff to create rage.

We can probably just conclude the Jays are interested in every remaining FA (except Jay Jackson).  I would hope Atkins (and any GM out there who's looking to compete) is interested and checking in on all the remaining important FAs.  That's kind of their job.

At this point, it just seems so far fetched for the Jays to just start landing multiple big name guys.

While I agree with the pessimism, reaching "finalist" status does mean you have a legit offer on the table.  Now whether any of the remaining free agents take that offer is another story.

Jays seem hellbent on not trying to overpay anyone so are hoping some of the players fall into their price range, which could happen with folks at this stage of free agency.

The term "finalist" is empty and meaningless.  The proof is in the doing.  If you tell me Bregman is just not worth it or even if management said that he wasn't the type of player they were looking for, then fine but pulling a fake about being in on everyone is just insulting.

In a lot of cases, I think this is very true. But this information is coming from a reporter in Houston where Bregman played. There isn't a lot of incentive for him to just make crap up, especially if it doesn't involve the Astros at all.

Ya I think Shatkins just like to stick to their price points and hope to find a bargain.  It's like the guy who sends decent trade proposal in fantasy but never quite good enough to make the deal happen.

In a normal world, this is a great method of targeting free agents to ensure you don't constantly overpay guys and screw your team long term.  The only problem with the Jays is that they don't have a good enough farm system to utilize this strategy now since most believe they need to spend their way out of this mess or just full out rebuild.  That frustration is just coming out in different way for folks lol.

Just using logic based on the reporting that's available.  Would love to hear your analysis rather than your pointless 1 liners lol.

Be straight on this, Spanky, why do you think we should believe we're "in" on all these guys when we never get any of them?

Cause they stink?!

You're spewing hyperbole, man. Give your head a swift shake, the roof has caved in, seems pretty logical to me.

Why did Springer, Gausman, Bassitt... etc... sign here? Think about what you're saying, man. The Jays looked like a powerhouse to be, but...

Of course we know we stink.  You don't gotta tell me when I've been "crying" about the bad moves we've been making the past few years while you and your crew were loving everything these guys were doing lol.

The topic here was why we've been "in on" so many guys.  This isn't a 1 year problem.  We have been reported to be in on free agents even when we were winning the past few years.  We do our due diligence on majority of the free agents and make lowball offers on the ones they don't absolutely love and make actual offers for the ones they do.  It's why our name seems to float around on so many guys.

Because it looked like we were on a good trajectory back then.  We're on a bad one now and costs of signing in Canada have gone through the roof.  There's no reason to believe we're close to signing anybody.  I think we won't have a chance until the Tavares court case on bonus taxation gets settled.

Therein lies your answer, as I was saying exactly that(their outlook)... but Toronto aren't faking it, hahaha. Geez Louise...

Is that supposed to be negative?  That is one part of being a good GM, no?

I've said that this is an awesome strategy to employ.  We literally have nothing to lose except building some goodwill with some agents and maybe get a player we weren't expecting to get under market value.

I said the frustration comes when this is the same strategy being employed when this team has no choice but to build through free agency the past 2 off-season.  The only options we had this off-season were to either overpay free agents or rebuild.  Right now the Jays are choosing Option C that no one wants, which is to suck at both lol.

i think we've got a shot at some one-year pillow type contracts but it's too expensive right now to put in a truly competitive long-term type bid.

The incentive is him getting paid...

Legit reporters stretch the truth all the time now.  Look at Morosi.  Almost nothing he reports is true or accurate.

It's all about headlines and clicks now.

Within baseball circles, I’m not sure Morosi has ever been taken seriously. He’s perhaps the least reliable big name other than ol’ Bob, who has flipped all the way over to hilarious with his inaccuracies.

I find Bob incredibly entertaining.
