Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 I missed most of the game last night. Was Billy in the house to see his kids ML debut? Billy was always one of my favourites growing up - I still remember when he first came to the majors. It's one of the first baseball memories I have of reading and learning about a young prospect. This short lefty flamethrower who was just blowing everyone away. Reading and learning about young prospects became a passion/hobby of mine for the past 30 years. It's surreal to see his son in the majors now - playing for my favourite team.

The_DH Verified Member Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 You know that previous start with Francis, I think it was the second inning, something just changed with Francis. It's like a light went on and he dominated. Hope it stays. As for Wagner, they say he could hit but defense didn't get any raves. This start showed some good enough D.

The_DH Verified Member Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 He was there according to the announcers though I didn't see him.

His splitter was lethal last night. really kept them from squaring up the fastball. His splitter development this season has been very important.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 I think Francis is making a case to be the #5 SP in 2025. I was really happy when the Jays got Wagner in the Kikuchi trade. I have a REALLY good feeling about him. That Kikuchi trade may really pay huge dividends for years. Rodriguez has generally been solid as well. It seems as though the team may have a decent back of the rotation in place for next season, but the safest course of action would be to bring in another mid rotation or better starter to push those guys into depth roles.

Before that clicked-in I thought he had no chance. He can't just rely on the fastball. The splitter doing its job seems to make the 92-93 mph fastball about 5 mph faster. Hopefully he gets it all in place for next year.

Im cool with both Francis and Yariel as the 4/5 at this point TBH, which leaves Bloss as the the defacto #6 I think (which is likely where he belongs right now). Yariel can't be optioned next season without his permission and Francis is out of options, so... truly it looks like adding at the top and shipping out Bassitt might be the play. Acquired top guy, Gausman, Berrios, Francis and Yariel with Bloss as the first man up, Manoah maybe being an option down the stretch... Pretty RH Heavy, but that's life.

I guess with Ricky T and eventually Manoah as the 7th potentially and 8th. Anybody put together a 2025 pitching depth chart along with availability to pitch? I think getting an ace and a 6-7 may not be a bad thing. So effectively I think we need to spend on 4 things being a starting pitcher, LF, DH and some bullpen. PS I think you forgot Bassitt? Best case they start real pitching around July ish, go on rehab for a month+, and between the inevitable setbacks and s*** performance from coming back from major arm surgery, best case they can relief for 2 innings at a time tops in late September. They're both strictly 2026 depth options at this point, let's hope they at least recover decently from their injuries, but I have even less faith in Ricky than I do Manoah to make it back as a contributor in the rotation. I can see Manoah coming back as a rock solid 4/5 innings eater with some potential for more, Ricky I think is doomed to relief, the innings just aren't there and he can't seem to handle a starter's load.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 Gausman Bassitt Berrios Yariel FA Signing Swingman- Francis AAA- Bloss, Macko Need to sign someone like Burnes or maybe Bieber (likely will miss the first month or so). Not opposed to bringing Kikuchi back as well. Would rather sign Kikuchi than Fried or Snell.

I was advocating trading Bassitt in the offseason, to free up money to chase the top guy. Depending on the return, it may also help fill a pen role and/or even another depth starter.
