Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 They did it. Jose Cuas RP called up from AAA. He is the guy they claimed from the Cubs last week. He is a righty.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2024 Author Posted June 29, 2024 Too bad really. Seems like a good dude. Also, a lefty RP if performing well with only a pro rated part of a $3 mil contract left would maybe fetch something interesting in A ball etc at the deadline.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 Guess he left them no choice. But being not right since game one, they sure took their time. Bullpen decimated right now. Swanson crapping the bed in AAA doesn't help. What a shitshow in terms of succession planning for the pen.

Usually there is a balance of surprise performances / breakouts and disappointments. This season is way over to one side of the balance. This is also why teams can be near bottom one year and playoffs the next. Yes I am saying luck and probability plays a big part.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 Nobody thought the pen was an issue before the season. Nobody thought pen depth was a weakness. That's just baseball.

But things don't happen overnight, hence my comment about succession planning. Poor John Shneider.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 Relievers are weird Recipe for bullpens is pretty simple. If you miss bats you have success.

Yeah velo matters, whiffs matter Can definitely say (sort of in hindsight) they the Jays were deploying a risky pen since several key relievers did not have velo. Mayza, Swanson, Richards
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 One of our few home grown arm pen success stories wil join the ranks of Thornton, Saucedo trying to stick with another team. I wish him well. His V and stuff just never looked right all season.

Pretty f***ing annoying that we always seem to have “bad luck” Can’t we just have the Yankees/Redsox luck for 1 f***ing season
BTS Community Moderator Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 So much attrition on the roster this year: Mayza - DFA'd Swanson - optioned to AAA Cabrera - should be optioned to AAA Berrios - stuff is completely gone, migth not even be tradeable anymore Gausman - stuff has deteriorated, and he's been hurt. No longer an ace Manoah - died Biggio - DFA'd Vogelbach - DFA'd Kirk - hits and runs like Jose Molina Kiermaier - replacement level Bichette - almost replacement level and feels like he's on his way out Springer - almost replacement level Like, IKF is leading this team in fWAR. It's so bad.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 Thank you to the Jays management for using him in several high leverage spots when it was obvious to the whole world he wasn't right this year. Losing all those games because you thought you had another version of Mayza is one of the reasons why fans have lost faith in this management group. I.e. Vogelbach went from hitting cleanup to getting DFA'd in a day...

O'Neil for 6M is working out. Duran is worth over 3 WAR and a bit of found money. I still they they are defying gravity. Yanks are just better than us with ungodly middle of the order ISO which offsets terrible offensive years from the likes of Torres, Cabrera and Rizzo. They have lost Cole and DJM for half the season but their depth is better. 2nd in HRs and runs in MLB. They made their own luck getting Soto etc. You can say the same about the O's. They have had some key IL stints but getting a guy like Burnes didn't hurt.

The choice has largely between giving previously effective relievers an extended look at the major league level vs getting rid of them and cycling through a bunch of waiver wire pickups given the lack of home grown relief prospects.
