Thanks Dean. It's no Swiss Chalet gift card but that was a nice gesture. Hopefully it's the first of many that I justifiably deserve after all the attacks you've thrown my way these past few weeks. Regardless, consider the hatchet buried.

And to add to the Vogelbach discussion, not only would they have to pay him, they'd have to clear ANOTHER 40-man spot for him. They already have to clear one for Serven and I'm scratching my head as to what they'll do there. Having to clear another one for Vogelbach seems really difficult.

I agree with this. It's early in the year and some of these guys have been slowly ramping up. Adding another multi-inning guy could be helpful early on. And in the case where Parsons does throw 3+ innings they can just option him down for a fresh arm in Pop anyway.

Good points fellas, I'm going with Lukes to start in that last roster spot, no way they throw away 2M. Cheers!

I basically agree with that but if they wait a week or two someone might hit the 60 day DL and then they don't have to cut anyone for Votto.

Brendon Little is probably the 1st to go off the 40-man.

Espinal was effectively the first off the 40 man roster leaving one spot open. That will go to a catcher, whoever it may be.

This has no relation to my post to Term. Espinal was already off the 40-man at the time of my post. Obviously I was referring to next to make room for Votto.

He's definitely a contender. If he's any good it'd be nice to keep him around as a lefty with 3 option years.

Looking at the 40-man it seems deep. I'm not sure who else would be an option. Wes Parsons maybe or possibly Zach Pop.

Parsons may be on the opening day 26 man roster as an injury replacement.

I think you're right that if they need to open up a spot for Votto or Vogelbach very soon it would be a reliever (Little or Pop). If Lukes makes the team and they don't need to add someone until Votto is ready or Jansen is activated, maybe it's Serven or Mitch White plays himself out of a 26-man spot.

Great point about Serven. That makes a ton of sense. When Jansen gets healthy in a week or two:

-DFA Serven, he probably passes through waivers and if not who cares

-Option Lukes

-Activate Jansen from the IL

-40-man roster spot is open, add Votto and activate him to the 26-man

-Print the playoff tickets

Do you want to risk losing Serven because of 2 starts? I'm not as sure about that. That's why I was wondering if we'd look at if there's any available catchers (available for free) and try to outright them after Jansen returns.

Who cares, Serven's a bum.

Serven projects for a wRC+ of 54. He's 29. No way he should be carried on the 40-man once Jansen is back.

I absolutely agree. That's why I think we should look for somebody that has to be cut loose by his team as spring training comes to a close. Roster them for the week or two that we need to replace Jansen and then try to pass them through waivers. That way we keep a backup (Serven) who's not on the 40 and can't be scooped up.

Why do you care if Serven is scooped up? He probably passes through waivers anyway and if not who cares. He sucks.

Because I think that one of the starters could go down again and Serven is better than nothing.

Henry is a 4th string catcher, he's going to have holes in his game somewhere lmao

Way to much thought going into this

If Kirk or Jansen end up being out long term they can find someone elsewhere via trade or waivers if Henry isn't picking up the slack. They snagged Serven off waivers a couple months ago

If we had two Kirks I'd agree with you and I'd consider this all but over, but we have Jansen, whose only real weakness is health issues.

Don't worry, they got some young kid in the system. I think his name is Gabirel?

I personally think they should try holding onto Serven this season as the 3rd catcher for injuries. If he has an option year. I’ve seen him described as a premium backup type. He put a positive WAR with a wRC+ of 52 in 2022. That’s the type of defense first guy I want for a 3rd string catcher. If he’s able to step right in and make the pitcher feel comfortable right off the bat. Not all waiver type catchers can do that.

Serven has 2 option years left, same for Henry

He's actually worse than nothing because keeping him around on the 40-man all year means we have to cut someone else.

Plus, the guy wasn't good enough to last on the Rockies 40-man roster (one of the worst rosters ever assembled) but somehow he's supposed to make ours. Not following the logic here.

If Manoahs BP tomorrow goes poorly he could start the year on the 60 day which frees an additional 40 man roster spot.

I doubt he’d go straight to the 60 day IL without any further testing or imaging, but it’s possible

He hasn't thrown in weeks at this point, unless the team and medical staff think he'd only be 2-3 weeks in the minors to get MLB ready there's no harm in putting him on the 60 and letting him build up like he was in spring training before going on a rehab assignment.
