Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 Why are you like this? Springer is not a DH. But yes, it makes it very unlikely. Soler would only be a logical full time DH. Now, JT likely slots in for a decent portion of DH duties. Kind of think the only possible addition they might make (budget allowing...) is some sort of RBH OF willing to sign on as a presumptive 4th OF to begin the year. Tommy Pham the obvious dude but he might cost too much. Springer 21 games at DH last season
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 I could see Turner starting at 3B every other day, then IKF replacing him by the 6th/7th depending on score I don't know about every other day. The Red Sox completely soured on him playing 3B during last season, and that's with him providing the option to rest Devers who isn't exactly Matt Chapman out there either. I think if we get 30 games from Turner at 3B it'll be too many. He can probably play a better 1B than Vlad so I'm sure we'll see him in the Belt role with rare appearances at 3B or 2B (late game, PH opportunities).
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 This offseason has been extremely underwhelming. The team really has to hope for some bounce backs because on paper they are a worse team than last season.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 I think he had a $6M buyout on the option though So it was more like turning down a $7.4M option Was a no brainer for him.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 As far as JDM vs. Turner goes, JDM had a 31% K rate in 2023, Turner's was 18.6% JDM is a lot closer to the cliff than Turner
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 I like this signing, Jays are in dire need of some serious leadership in their clubhouse. He will also help in the RISP situations.

For next season Id put money on JDM being the way better hitter.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 I like this signing, Jays are in dire need of some serious leadership in their clubhouse. He will also help in the RISP situations. He has a ton of playoff experience. The ability to play 3B/1B is also nice. A lot of the other DH options are DH only or are a COF butcher. I also like that it's only 1 year.
wamco Verified Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 I thought I’d bat him 2nd but that was before I saw His RISP numbers. My preference is for Springer to move down in the order ideally
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 I think he had a $6M buyout on the option though So it was more like turning down a $7.4M option $6.7M it turns out. If he hits any of his incentives he earns his highest salary ever. Not bad for a 39 year old
wamco Verified Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 Dean- this signing calls for a budget update/projection.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 Anyone here think the Jays are done with MLB roster moves? I don't
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 Dreadful offseason so far lol
RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 So this is pretty much it right? Probably nothing major is happening after this. Maybe a Espinal and/or Richards trade?
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 2023 bases empty - .232 RISP - .338 Our RISP issues are fixed guys. We signed a clutch hitter. Sarcasm aside, he's been a much more productive hitter with RISP throughout his career too - one of the few players who consistently performs better with RISP. From what i've watched, he seems like a very good situational hitter. A guy that can drive the ball to all fields, slap an oppo single when needed, all that stuff. i like the signing, just wish we were still adding someone like Bellinger/Chapman too. I'm still not entirely thrilled about the way the everyday lineup is looking. 1. Springer 2. Bo 3. Vlad 4. Turner 5. Kirk 6. Varsho 7. Schneider 8. IKF 9. Keirmaier Still missing power, not a great L/R balance, and the bottom 3rd of the lineup could be a major problem.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 Roster Resource has been updated, they have Turner as DH batting 4th, and dropped Otto Lopez off the 25 man. A nice bench of Jansen, IKF, Espinal, and Horwitz. And Buffalo loaded with depth.

On paper(aka projections) I'd be willing to bet we're expected to be better than last year's actuals.
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 RHB with no D or baserunning and likely to get hurt. Might get 2 wins for 20M out of IKF and Turner
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 I like it. He's not going to play a bunch at 3b... Maybe a handful of games, but he can fill in 1B for Vladdy though and be the primary DH for the most part.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 Anyone here think the Jays are done with MLB roster moves? I don't My heart says no, but my brain says yes they're likely done.
deanmike Verified Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 Dean- this signing calls for a budget update/projection. If BNS and Zwelling are right the Jays are done. If I am right (way less likely than Rogers Sportsnet mouthpieces being right) they have roughly 5-6M left under the 2nd threshold.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 At this point Chapman is the ideal signing. Would relegate Horwitz to Buffalo, and Schneider and Biggio would be an excellent 2B platoon. Jettisoning Espinal and getting a speed guy for the bench would be the cherry on top. As of right now, the Jays got to be one of the slowest, if not the slowest, teams in baseball.

A nice bench of Jansen, IKF, Espinal, and Horwitz. And Buffalo loaded with depth. There's a lack of elite talent, but the team is really f***ing deep: - Jansen/Clement/Espinal/Biggio on the bench with guys like Barger, Martinez, Lukes, Horwitz optionable at AAA. - A loaded MLB bullpen with a bunch of interesting arms also on the 40-man: Danner, Francis, Macko, Little, Pop, Zulueta - One of the best 5-man rotations in the league, with Tiedemann, White, Rodriguez, Espino, Francis all providing depth A couple spots on the 40-man that should be replaced, but this is a deep roster.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 Now projected for a .328 wOBA and 27.8 WAR for our batters. 2023 was .324 and 25.8.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 IMO the moves they made this offseason are more "high floor, low ceiling" type moves. No real risk but also no real gain anywhere. The roster is solid, but nothing extraordinary. Definitely will compete for a playoff spot but they won't be a favoured team if they get in.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 What a disappointment this off season has been. IKF and Turner. We were reduced to taking our fourth best option. Beggars can't be choosers I guess. Gonna be an interesting season, hopefully for not the wrong reasons.

Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
