G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Volpe projects as a 3-win player next year, for league min. I don't think that would be a reasonable ask for 1-year of Soto at 30M or whatever. Soto is projected to get 33M in arb Would that be a record? It's gotten to the point that lower budget teams can't really afford to keep "early superstar" players though all their initial years of control.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 After Shapiro criticized AA for trading away all these prospects he's just going to turn around and do the same thing for 1 year of Soto? I do find that hard to believe.. Maybe Manoah for Soto straight up would work for the Jays if they think he's damaged goods/the relationship is beyond repair but if you're having to trade Monah plus 2 or 3 other prospects I just cant see it... There is some real question marks about this roster after 2025 and if you deplete the farm system and trade for Soto its going to be really difficult not to have to go through a rebuild. Flags Fly Forever... and the ask at the moment is ludicrous, what L54 posted would be close, I'd bet. Add Zulu and bada bing!
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 f*** Soto, just throw money at him next off season when he's a free agent. This is what happens when your pos GM gets desperate to save his ass. Deplete the farm for a one year shot is f***ing stupid. Go get Ohtani and f*** Soto.

Add Zulu and bada bing! f*** that.. Build sustainable winning and hope you win that way. At least this way the fans can build a relationship with the players which would make winning a WS and the road leading to it more passionate. Remember how good it felt being a fan in the 80s leading up to the back to back WS titles? It doesn't get any better than that.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 There is no elite talent aside from Ricky T coming to produce a “sustainable” winner in my view. Are you gonna build a team around Orelvis Martinez and Addison Barger? I don’t view these prospects that highly so I don’t mind cashing in

Roberts added that Ohtani is “clearly our top priority.” Asked why he was so direct when other clubs have gone to great measures to conceal their efforts to negotiate with Ohtani, Roberts replied (via MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince): “I don’t feel like lying is something I do. I was asked a question. … It’s going to come out at some point.” Imagine if this insulted Ohtani so he stopped talking to the Dodgers
deanmike Verified Member Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 I really hope Ohtani stays true on holding leaks against teams come decision time !! Nice one Davey !!
Marew Verified Member Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 That is guaranteed reason why he signed with us and not dodgers. Dave roberts was always a kook. Probably even left money on the table to not have to deal with that guy. Bragging about hosting him Jesus Christ.
jaysthebest Verified Member Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 I guess Ohtani will be signed with the Dodgers by tomorrow. Roberts is very confident that Ohtani will play for them.

Isn't a >.500 record for 4 straight years and a playoff birth in 3 of the last 4 years (while missing a clean 4 for 4 by 1 game) a sustainable winner? I mean the Jays haven't been >.500 for 4 straight years since that run from '83 to '93. But yeah, that POS GM who hasn't even acquired a guy like Soto should be s*** on for potentially trading for him? Edited December 5, 2023 by Brownie19

jaysthebest Verified Member Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Hope the Jays could land Ohtani, but it seems to be the Dodgers are very likely at this point. I'm okay with Soto for the plan B.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 That dude looks like the Stocktwits poster of baseball Twitter*. *For those who are not familiar with Stocktwits, it's a site where a bunch of dipshits tag a million stocks with their bullish or bearish calls. Then 6 months later make a montage of all their "correct" (aka cherry-picked guesses that went their way) calls to make them seem like they have a legit track record.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 As cynical as I am that Ohtani actually signs here, man, this had been an exciting last several days. I'm really resisting letting myself believe this could happen. I still have scars from the Darvish fiasco. But man, this is exciting.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Roberts either knows the Dodgers are getting him or knows they are not. Or neither. Dammit Shohei just make your damn choice so we can all move on.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2023 Author Posted December 5, 2023 Ok so let's do a little process of elimination here. Cubs are OUT. Roberts opened his fat mouth, so the Dodgers are OUT. Ohtani went and saw that left field wall in San Fran and they are OUT. He wants to play for a winner so the Angels are OUT. Simple process of elimination leaves only the Jays folks.
