I never said a word about Cameneti. There were higher ranked guys according to MLB.com draft rankings that were not taken yet.

You can obviously dream on guys like Caminiti and Lindsey and even to a lesser extent Honeycutt who was someone I wanted at our pick because he's electric. But we can't complain with a getting a guy that considered top 3 or 4 college pitchers in this draft. Ranked much higher than we picked. And is a polished fast mover but also has stuff. He can touch 98 and he has 2 legit off-speed pitches. I'm happy anyway.

All the talking heads thought he would go higher. It seems there was some pre-draft health thing that came up with him (they didn't say what) and thought he'd slip a bit, but not to 20.

Following a strong summer in the Cape Cod League, he transferred to Mississippi State and has improved throughout the spring. His Draft stock has risen accordingly and he could sneak into the top three rounds. Stephen's fastball operates at 92-94 mph and touches 96, but it's most notable for natural carry that allows it to miss more than its share of bats. His best secondary pitch is a solid mid-80s changeup with significant fade. He also possesses a pair of average breaking balls with similar movement, favoring his mid-80s slider over his upper-70s curveball. Few college pitchers can match Stephen's feel for four pitches. He has the ability to get in-zone swings and misses as well as chases on each of his offerings, and he commands his fastball particularly well. He lacks a true plus offering but has a high floor as a No. 4 or 5 starter.

Who is Yesavage? Yesavage first showed off his promising arm with a 15.9 K/9 rate as a freshman at East Carolina before moving into the rotation once he improved his command as a sophomore and went 18-2 with a 2.28 ERA over his final two seasons with the Pirates. Yesavage was hospitalized with a partially collapsed lung during the 2024 season but returned to the mound less than two weeks later and defeated fellow first-round prospect Chase Burns of Wake Forest in an NCAA regional elimination game.

 

Why the Blue Jays took him here: He's the top college pitcher remaining on the board and feels like good value at this spot. He may be more floor than ceiling, but with Yusei Kikuchi a free agent and Chris Bassitt possible trade bait, Yesavage's polished repertoire could mean he moves quickly through the minors to fill an immediate need. If he adds even a little more velocity, he could end up being one of the steals of the first round.”

 

 

There were some negatives however, according to some reports 10 - 12 teams took him off their first round draft boards. The reasoning for doing this is that Trey has an extremely high release point. Generally, it is in the 7 foot range. The only pitcher in recent history who does this is Justin verlander .

 

This characteristic creates a downward plane, which creates exceptional torque and stress on the shoulder capsule, which has led to many pitchers eventually needing Tommy John surgery, fortunately however Trey has not had any history of that yet. But as reported some teams expressed serious concerns which probably led to him falling down from top 5 to where the jays drafted him.
