Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 I think the Phillies missing out really hurt in terms of national interest. Pat McAfee who seems like someone who'd rather get punched in the face than talk about baseball had Bryce Harper on his show during the playoffs. That was the one team left that might have interested a national audience. Beyond that, this matchup just isn't sexy at all, and it doesn't help that they started the series on a Friday night instead of Tuesday like they used to. I think if they have more games like Game 1, then maybe the later games in the series will do better, but I can't be the only one who is waiting for this series to end so the off-season can start. Maybe that's just the impatient Blue Jays fan in me. The teams involved are one part of it, the other part is the playoffs are too long.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 The teams involved are one part of it, the other part is the playoffs are too long. How can you say that when the NBA has (4) 7 game series’ They do just fine
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 Looks like a big drop from last year, which would suggest the teams. But I think the problem is “the team”, as in singular. They do have uniforms that make you not want to watch them
Marew Verified Member Posted October 31, 2023 Author Posted October 31, 2023 Corbin carrol reminds me of Josh brolin in no NCFOM movie. Very punchable face. If he was on our team I think I’d like him more but I just don’t.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 Interesting. Maybe I just love baseball too much, but I've been glued to the TV for Game 1 and Game 2. Game 1 was f***ing incredible. You watch playoff baseball, just hoping to see a game like that every few years. Reminded me of the David Freese year. If that was the Jays and Bo hit a 2 run, game tying bomb in the 9th and Vlad walked it off in the 11th, it would go down as one of the best games in Blue Jays history - right up there with Carter's home run, Alomar's home run off Eck, the Bautista Bomb and EE's walk off v. the O's. Yeah Game 1 was great, so maybe the quality of this series hooks me back in eventually. I usually watch the World Series regardless, and I'm still paying attention to it, but the D-Backs do absolutely nothing for me. Hopefully there was more great games in the series either way.

Game 1 was very good, game 2 kinda meh. Game 3 was another close one which was nice but Arizona was missing that big hit to make things interesting.

Plus like you said, the ability to market players like Bryce Harper in the World Series would have been big. A lot of stuff in sports is happening now as well. NFL is in full swing, college football on Saturday's, and both the NHL and NBA started up. Plus it was Halloween weekend where a lot of adults all went out to costume parties or bars on both Friday and Saturday night haha. As well like mentioned in this thread, places like Texas and Arizona are states that are more into high school and college football and the NFL than baseball.

Governator Community Moderator Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 I mean, we already did that when we increased it from 154 to 162 games. I could see going back to 154... We've been 162 games for the past 60+ years when they expanded the teams. I personally don't like the idea of shrinking the season at this point, too much history and records that are tied to it in my opinion.

I'm curious if there was a lot of outrage in 1961 when they increased it to 162 games. I suspect the old school people at the time were up in arms because it would screw up the history/records. Not sure we have anyone old enough here to tell us all about it. With no social media, I suspect most of the complaints were expressed at the local coffee shop.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 Yeah Roger Maris got tons of hell for the 162 game season. Ah yes - that's the obvious example and of course he hits 61 home runs in the first season they moved to 162 games...unreal!

One time this board had a fantasy league everyone took very seriously, smartest of smartest dudes. It’s still around but much less prestigious. They got so pissed when I won the league they stuck an asterisk once I left the league when I was bored with it
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 On the trophy I mean Did you find a way to construct your fantasy roster to have the advantage in the playoffs?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 Did you find a way to construct your fantasy roster to have the advantage in the playoffs? He traded all his farm assets for MLB players, won the league and quit. lol... leaving the team crippled for the future owners hence the asterisk in the first season.

The openings you guys had last year, the teams were gigantic piles of diarrhea. Worse than something I could do, even if I tried

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 Which league did Connor win??
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 Which league did Connor win?? LOD.. which when it debuted, was the crown jewel of the board. It’s since just become another league. The heyday in general is long past. There used to waiting lists and turnaways for leagues. As posters dwindled, so did that part obviously
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 I expect FULL and sincere apologies from all the D-Bags stans of the board. Last night was an affront to the game of baseball. The D-Bags, a team with a negative run differential and the worst uniforms in professional sports, are so terrible that they actually don't even have a #4 starting pitcher. So in the hallowed World Series they started journeyman reliever JOE MANTIPLY and then followed him with a collection of shitbag relievers who gave up 10 runs in the first 3 innings. What a joke. So to answer OP's question, YES the World Series does have a credibility problem and last night proves it.

Then it would be "What credibility problem? We just got lucky enough to draw the sub-500 pythag record DBacks in the World Series. That's baseball!" Or unless, the Jays were on a Cinderella World Series run like the DBacks with a s*** pythag record and run differential. Then it would be "We love the new wild card format! It gave our Cinderella Jays their chance in October!"

This isn't the first warning of this nature this guy has received. I'd wager it's far past the point of warnings already.

I guess I'm confused as to what is considered repetitive at this point. Because the only other infractions I've received so far are a temp ban for apparently going too far with a Vlad post, and a warning on a post I made about Shatkins. What does me disagreeing with the premise of this thread have to do with the other 2 things?
