I will go on record and say the Blue Jays will NEVER sign a big free agent player from Japan.

And neither will 25 of the 30 MLB teams. At least, not until this stupid system is changed.

This is accurate.

They’re free agents. What change to the free agent system would make any difference other than a hard cap and floor?

Why are they free agents? Did they accrue 6 years of MLB service time?

They’re free agents because they’ve played professional baseball in other countries for years and thus are not amateur draft eligible

If you’re thinking an international draft solves international free agency with respect to the KBO/Japan thing, you have a faulty understanding of how that system differs greatly from the one that signs 16 year olds out of the Latin American and South American countries.

Nothing about my thinking is faulty.

To make the process fair, any players in KBO/Japan that have expressed interest in playing in MLB should become draft eligible. The team that drafts one of these players can either attempt to sign and pay the commensurate compensation to the KBO/Japan team, or trade the rights to another team willing to pay the price. This way, all 30 MLB teams potentially benefit from the top KBO/Japan players and not just one of the richest teams.

Not that, the proposed change, you dummy. The current system is ridiculous.

The current system was just agreed to in the recent CBA, no? What's ridiculous was the deferrals being allowed to that extreme, that need's to be fixed.

I am aware the current system is in the CBA, that doesn't mean its permanent.

Dude you didn't think they were FA's several minutes ago? Don't get upset with me, bruh.

I knew they were FA's, but I was questioning why that is because it doesn't need to be that way. Their rights can be drafted, as I posted, to make it a more fair system.

As you probably know, players eligible for the NHL entry draft are amateur, collegiate, and professional players in the European Leagues. In effect, every player that comes into the NHL is subject to the fairness of the draft for distributing talent.

If they’re 18 …sure, they can already be signed as an international amateur free agent subject to international spending limits if they player agrees to not declare themselves eligible for their own countries amateur drafts to the pros. Ohtani almost that when he was 18 coming out of high school.

Bi you can’t implement a draft of professionals from other countries pro leagues. You’d never get an agreement from other leagues to let that happen.

Even kids that go undrafted from high school and college here and have never played pro ball become free agents, they don’t just keep remaining draft eligible.

It’s like you want to lump every single player that isn’t from the US and Canada as a draft eligible amateur.

The NHL does it. Professionals playing in the Swedish Hockey League, probably the top European league, and other professional hockey leagues, are regularly drafted by NHL teams. Compensation has to be worked out with the swedish pro team before the player comes to the NHL, or the player just plays out their swedish league contract, then signs with the NHL team that owns their rights.

Far better than the posting system, would you agree?

Yes, but just because one pro sports league does something doesn’t mean it’s remotely likely in another.

Yes, I concede that it would be possible theoretically if Japan and Korea suddenly decided they wanted to have virtually no good baseball players left in their leagues, but I tend to deal in changes that have the chance of actually happening.

It’s fine to just say “they should do X because it would be more fair” and that may well be true, but if the chances of something like that happen ending are between 0 and 0.1%, there not much point in entertaining the idea.

Atkins reports today that he is really happy going ahead with today's roster if there are no more adds. Sweet. Should we plan the parade?

I scheduled to get my IKF tattoo next week!

I know one thing you should do - it's stop taking things that GM's or players say in interviews very seriously. That would be a good start. Did anyone actually expect him to say "well f*** - we swung and missed on a couple of big name guys already, this offseason f***ing blows so far. I really hate this team as it's currently constructed - we're going to average like 2 runs a game with these bums. I can't seem to find a team to give me anything good for Espinal - sure wish he didn't s*** the bed last year and tank his value. We need some more offense, but Teo thinks he's worth a 5 year deal and Boras wants the world for that 1 year wonder Bellinger - f*** that guy - too much risk at that price. I told him to call me back when he realizes nobody is stupid enough to give him 8 years. We're in a s***** spot here - we really need Vlad and Kirk to get in shape and hit like they can or this window is going to slam shut. Can't have Springer and Varsho suck goats either - need 25 HRs from both of them this year. Oh and I'm still trying to find someone stupid enough to give me the world for Ricky T - I read a rotowire article that he has red flags. I'm going to lose my job soon if s*** doesn't improve".

I mean - I'm sure that's what he's actually thinking, but obviously he can't say that in public.
