Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 I want Hader if nothing else to prevent the Orioles from getting him. But he is exactly what we need in the back end of the Bullpen. Can remove Romano out of the Closer role. I won't hold my breath on this front office making a huge bullpen addition. If my memory is right, Cleveland Added Andrew Miller after they left the organization and we all know how crucial he was for then.

Had they had it they don’t lose that game in the Seattle series. Romano is decent but he’s not that guy. Someone like Josh Hader has that dog in em. When push comes to shove your gonna strikeout and not advance base runners off him.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Author Posted July 28, 2023 Do I need to remind you of reliever volatility and how even the best of them can suck in those small sample sizes? He'd be a great target but he's a rental and in a seller's market I think he'll command too much prospect capital.

At least he has some control left.

Its worth it. If you can get a shut down arm like that you get it

If you can get a shut down arm like that you get it If he's on and delivers in the ~20 regular seasons innings we give him and then delivers in the playoffs too it could be worth kicking the tires on. So I see what you are saying but what would we give up for him? It would take at least one of our top 5 prospects to go with another guy in the Top 10. I think we could all agree that we wouldn't trade Tiedemann for him but would we trade Barger and Sem Robberse for him? Or Orelvis Martinez and Kloff? Or Barriera and Schneider? At the minimum it probably takes a package like that right? And probably more.

Looking at the precedent you might see something like Kloffenstein and Cooke? Probably higher than that. Depends on how they feel about other guys, but don’t get hung up on a # ranking on a prospect list somewhere

One of the young position players in AAA. But won't be Martinez

It might not be the best move in the world to move him out of a role where he has really excelled.

It might not be the best move in the world to move him out of a role where he has really excelled. I felt multi inning reliever Romano before he was the closer was the best version of Romano I have seen. He can still be the saved guy. But sometimes the game is decided in the 7th and 8th inning. And having Hader agianst the meat of the order is my kinda s***.

I agree... pretty much what Andrew Miller was for the Indians.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 I think Chad Green is likely to be the late inning shutdown guy once he is ready to be activated.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 I think Chad Green is likely to be the late inning shutdown guy once he is ready to be activated. He very well could be. But the Jays could absolutely use another one as well. We just can't expect him to be the Yankees Chad Green right away.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 Ok, now I want the Jays to snag Hader lol Adding Hader and Green to an already top 5(ish) bullpen? Yes please. And I still want old man Scherzer too
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 I think Chad Green is likely to be the late inning shutdown guy once he is ready to be activated. Yeah he can be and I hope he is, but putting all your eggs in one basket hoping Green is that guy comes with risk. He's coming back from injury and we've seen arms sometimes take a while to settle in. Doesn't hurt adding another elite bullpen arm at the deadline.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 Yeah Hader would fill the role like Miller did with Cleveland in 2016. That's what the Blue Jays need. Hader filled that role before when he was with the Brewers as well. I would leave Romano where he is. As for Bednar, love the control that comes with him but moving him out of his closers role I'm not a big fan of. We've seen guys traded and taken out of the closers role suck with their new clubs. Either way, adding another elite pen arm should be the priority.

Hader filled that role before when he was with the Brewers as well. I would leave Romano where he is. Miller was used in a variety of situations multi innings even. You really want to use Hader like that? Moreover do you think Schneider has the in game decision making ability to deploy him like Tito was using Miller? Nah, if we get Hader he will be used like a scalpel: surgical and precise. Maybe Green can be the Everyman role.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 How about Paul Sewald? Seattle won't sell I think there are only 8 to 10 sellers this year. 8 non contenders then the Mets and Padres. Looks like the Mets are selling. Doubt the Padres give up
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 Seattle won't sell I think there are only 8 to 10 sellers this year. 8 non contenders then the Mets and Padres. Looks like the Mets are selling. Doubt the Padres give up SEA wont be selling agreed. They are quietly on a mini roll and 3 games over .500 6-4 in their last 10. They are having the same "if our underperformers come around we can make a run" discussion we Jays fan's are having. The difference is we sit 1 slim 1.5 games up for final WC.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 If it's a matter of losing very good prospects for rentals I'm not for it.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 If there is one thing I trust the Jays FO to do, it's trade prospects. Not a single one they've traded yet has managed to amount to anything valuable at the MLB level.
