Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Vladdy gonna win the gold glove for the next 10 years.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Vlad's defense is so f***ing good. Can’t understand why the stats say he’s one of the worst defenders in the league
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Jays WIN!!! Rays LOSE!!! Orioles LOSE!!! Yankees LOSING!!! Great day all around. Go Oilers! Nice win! A near perfect game. Letting Pearson get his feet wet and Bass a chance to turn things around is as good as it gets.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Is Eloy considered a butcher? That should be an easy play for any RF Big time
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Can’t understand why the stats say he’s one of the worst defenders in the league I don't know either but I don't place a lot of value on the range metrics, for first basemen. Eye test says his range and ability to make high-level plays like unique throws are both good. And he's sublime at picking it, which I don't think the metrics really capture.

He's so alike and athletic for a 1B. If Andres Galarraga hadn't claimed it, 'the big cat' would be an appropriate nickname.
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Amazing game from Berrios. Looked confident with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Him and Kikuchi pissed off and pushing s*** in right now. Awesome to see. Nice reaction from Pearson after hitting a batter. Calmed down and trusted his stuff way more than he has in the past. Hopefully he takes a big breath and just comes out and pitches from now on. Kiermaier has been a revelation. Love his hustle and zeal. What a huge add. Hard to cheer for jack-bass but glad he got his job done. Now time for him to shut the f*** up and pitch.

Even Bo is credited with 2 DRS so far which is a nice development.

The changeup is such a difference maker pitch for him so it's nice to see him using it more often.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Defensive metrics have always been wildly inconsistent. Vlad is above average in every category of First Base. Chapman is making plays other Third Basemen don’t even get to. Even Varsho’s defensive numbers look weird thid year despite being loved in CF. Maybe a larger sample fixes things but the metrics have always been out of whack.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Don’t the stats say Vlad and Chappy aren’t very good at D? Currently, yes. But by the end of season it always seems Vlad is near the bottom.

Maybe a larger sample fixes things but the metrics have always been out of whack. The other night Isiah Kiner-Falefa made a spectacular dive and the Yankees broadcaster were going on and on about how well he's adjusted to the outfield. Then I saw somewhere else the catch was actually 99% catch probability, looking back at it you could tell he got a bad jump, but hard to tell in the moment. I mostly just look at the defense column on fangraphs and they always seem to make roughly make sense. With some exceptions the players that are regarded as good defensively score high, are somewhat consistent year to year, start to degrade as they get into their 30s. I honestly don't know exactly how these systems work. It would be nice to see some video of the top plays the guys are either getting penalized or rewarded for. Get a better understanding of which plays Vlad not making.

So the system is consistent for the good and bad outliers. Chapman is 30, maybe already lost a bit. I can recall off-hand a couple of plays he didn't make this year. One in the second game that led to Gausman un-earned runs, and one Monday, there's probably more. On the other hand he made some great throws yesterday so arm strength is still there. A few bad plays early in the season can probably skew things. Maybe same with Varsho. Vlad defense has been pretty consistently rated bad. Maybe he just doesn't have great mobility, even for a first basemen, but looks great because he has elite hand eye coordination.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Defensive metrics aren't worth looking at this time of year, also they f***ing suxxxxxxx. Berrios threw his hardest pitch last night as a Blue Jay, SP getting it together, we like our team Barry!
