JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 ESPN The new rule: Pickoffs are now considered one version of "disengagements," which consist of any time that the pitcher makes a pickoff attempt, fakes a pickoff, or steps off the rubber, as well as when the defense requests time. Pitchers are allowed two disengagements per plate appearance without penalty. How it will be enforced: After a third step-off, the pitcher will be charged with a balk, unless at least one offensive player advances a base I am totally against that new rule and the clock. They are ruining the game. Gaining a base on a technicality, that's not baseball.

Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 One of my most enjoyable yr of watching baseball was the season of the Go-Go Expos when they had Leflore, Dawson and my fav player to watch on the bases Rodney Scott. Bring this new rule on, I'm sure the rule will be massaged to get it right. Will this cause some teams to even change what type of hitters in their lineups?

Speed becomes more valuable, yes, along with left handed SP. Also speed at the top of the batting order becomes more of a consideration, and mixing of speed guys and cloggers in the order avoided (this is particularly relevant to the Jays). My thoughts, anyway Wasn't Scott the guy that was a master in swiping 3B?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 Bo might get some fantasy value back

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 "here's what baseball with a pitch clock is really like" Except it's 25 seconds not 15 I like watching this kind of thing, and can see how baserunning is going to be extremely important. You can see how runners on base will be able to time their secondary leads and stealing jumps quite easily based on the pitch clock alone regardless of how many pickoffs may or may not have been attempted.

Yeah more action, game time cut. A blow to tradition but it’s an ADHD generation. Hopefully they do it in the playoffs as well and stop 8pm games from going past midnight

My thoughts, anyway Wasn't Scott the guy that was a master in swiping 3B? Yes he was, he also would round a base after a hit and would just go far enough and stop to get a throw behind him then he would dart onto the next base. Seen him do this numerous times, Paul Molitor also did this with the Twins and Jays. I really enjoy aggressive base runners who has the intuition when to take chance and not to.

This is definitely being done to bring stolen bases back into the game. Obviously improving the pace of play is a big factor as well, but steals have basically been eliminated from the game now and it's one of the more exciting plays in baseball. Pinch runners are going to have a lot more value now, and a catcher's ability to throw is going to become a lot more valuable as well.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 "here's what baseball with a pitch clock is really like" Except it's 25 seconds not 15 It's actually 14 seconds in the video. The initial time you see is the changing of batter time. MLB’s version in 2023 will be slightly different. There will be a 15-second timer between pitches with the bases empty and a 20-second clock with runners on base. Like the minors, there is a 30-second timer between batters. The minor league version went like this: A 14-second timer between pitches with the bases empty was instituted across all levels. The timer increased to 18 seconds with a runner on base at every level but triple A where it was 19 seconds. There was also a 30-second timer between batters. The penalties were simple: An automatic ball if the pitcher didn’t throw the pitch in time and an automatic strike if the hitter wasn’t ready.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 So lets bring more of them in the game... right? Do we really need guys walking in circles on the mound for 30 seconds in between each pitch??

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 I can respect that comment if it came from actual MLB pitchers. Vast majority of AAA pitchers welcomed the changes according to all the polls they did. Said it took them about a month to really get used to it. That said, they didnt have the pickoff rules in place as well, just the pitch clock.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 The limited pickoff and clock time adds a touch bit more of strategy to the game.
