John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2023 Posted January 26, 2023 I cant find a Devon White with #19 which he wore for one season before switching to 25. White was given #19 but knowing that McGriff was just traded and was highly respected in Toronto he opted to switch to #25 at some point during the season.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2023 Posted January 26, 2023 Is Jose Bautista not on the Level of Excellence yet. I swear that’s long overdue if not. He had an insane run for us.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2023 Posted January 27, 2023 What about HOFer Fred McGriff Honestly I’m down. Especially considering he plans to enter the hall as a Blue Jay. Edwin as well.

Don't want to ruin the continuity so I won't post the picture. But looks like you can buy the card for $3 if you want. https://www.firstrow.ca/products/devon-white-1991-team-issue-blue-jays-fire-safety-30
The_DH Verified Member Posted January 27, 2023 Posted January 27, 2023 There was a pitcher. The definition of work horse.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2023 Posted January 27, 2023 Ya, I enjoyed watching Clancy work. He didn't have great stuff or anything, he just went out and battled.
The_DH Verified Member Posted January 27, 2023 Posted January 27, 2023 He was a workhorse, 35+ starts a season and 200+ innings. And 10-15 complete games. That doesn't happen anymore.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2023 Posted January 27, 2023 Ya, I enjoyed watching Clancy work. He didn't have great stuff or anything, he just went out and battled. I always find it crazy when I look back and see decent pitchers who had almost a 1:1 K/BB ratio. Tom Glavine was another one that stood out like that for me.

For good reason. I understand why fans miss starters throwing 200+ innings, winning 20 games, etc - but the reason why baseball has moved away from this is so bloody obvious. It baffles me why there's such a large % of baseball fans who can't comprehend why and get angry about it (primarily based off ignorant views as to why it's happening).
The_DH Verified Member Posted January 27, 2023 Posted January 27, 2023 Yes it was a different era when pitchers had to pace themselves a lot more. Jack Morris was one of the best at doing that.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2023 Posted January 27, 2023 Yes it was a different era when pitchers had to pace themselves a lot more. Jack Morris was one of the best at doing that. It sure was. I was curious, so I just looked up the 1982 numbers. The Jays only used 13 pitchers that year and 5 of them posted negative WAR, while Eichhorn had almost a 1:1 K/BB ratio and a 5.45 ERA. They had 2 bullpen arms that weren't complete dog s***. Roy Lee Jackson and Dale Murphy - both who got ridden into the ground (97 and 111 innings respectfully).
The_DH Verified Member Posted January 27, 2023 Posted January 27, 2023 One of the biggest differences is the Tommy John surgery and training in general. Back in 1982, a torn rotator was the end of a career so pitchers had to be more careful. Now they go nuts.

Back in 1982, a torn rotator was the end of a career so pitchers had to be more careful. Now they go nuts. A torn rotator is still typically career ending. You just don't see that injury a lot anymore because we have a much better understanding of proper mechanics (or at least mechanics that puts more pressure on the elbow - resulting in more velo and more TJS's).
The_DH Verified Member Posted January 27, 2023 Posted January 27, 2023 i remember watching Tommy John pitch. It was sad.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2023 Posted January 27, 2023 i remember watching Tommy John pitch. It was sad. Before or after he had Tommy John?
The_DH Verified Member Posted January 28, 2023 Posted January 28, 2023 Before or after he had Tommy John? It was after. His arm action seemed so unnatural.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2023 Posted January 28, 2023 So f***ing out! Who is the Bluejay SS/2b, without cheating. It looks like Carter in RF
