no doubt. If anything it makes it worse.

Im down another belt loop since the semester started, another ....60-70 pounds to go.

Try swimming or even prolonged wading/movement in cool water. It burns fat like crazy. I went from 235 to 212 pounds this summer on a body type that didn't need to lose 20 pounds in the first place (6'8" tall). Lowest weight I had since my teens. Spent 2-3 hours in the lake up at my cottage 3-4 days a week. I mainly did it because it felt so good on my joints and calming various aches and pains collected from 40 years of this body type. The weight loss was not my goal.

Then I stumbled upon some totally reliable online bro science about the subject. Turns out real science is mixed about the relationship of cool water to weight loss. But it makes sense from a capitalist point of view. No pharma company is going to do studies to prove that swimming in cool water burns calories like crazy just to not sell their weight loss drug. So it's basically anecdotal like my experience.

Unfortunately bad timing for this advice. Starting in May you probably had access to cool but tolerable bodies of water to try this out for a few months. Now you'll just get hypothermia.

I mean it's probably just the extra movement and not the cold water, right

Still am, but at my worst i was 6'6" 473 that I am aware of. Could have been heavier but that was the heaviest I ever saw on a scale.

was down to 360 a few months ago, next doctor visit they'll get the crane working again and see where I'm at but i find theat every belt loop I go down it's about 20 pounds. Im guessing im around 345-ish. Goal is 250 then we'll see how it looks from there. I've got a lot of muscle mass under there somewhere according to all the tests i've had done so the estimate is 250 is where I would probably be "normal" for my size and muscle mass.

Hard to say for sure as I've never had the full like MRI-based body scan to determine fat, bone and muscle mass. They have one here at USask so I might wander over there one day

Good for you Johnny that’s a great story. Keep up the good work!

Awesome job. Hopefully this coming year I can do something similar for a 2nd time

My guess it's that it's a mix between the two. I mean, standing like a rock in the water and shivering probably won't do that much. But personally, swimming is 1,000x more enjoyable than running. I can imagine it's like that for a lot of other people too. And if swimming in cool water burns calories all the more than land-based cardio, just a bonus.

I think it's likely some of both. The body burns a ton of extra calories in thermogenesis when trying to warm up in cold environments as brown fat is activated in this process. A cold swimming pool/lake would have virtually limitless amounts of available heat transfer compared to something like a bath tub which would eventually warm up.

Holy s*** you sound like you could have taken up a career as a pro wrestler or something. Congrats on the weight loss so far. I was never super heavy but still managed to drop about 50 pounds of fat back when I was in my 20's which made a dramatic difference to my smaller frame. I've never really managed to add as much muscle as I was hoping for but felt so much better about myself at the lower weight.

My one pro wrestling match was against 2 midgets in a promotion that I was participating in through a radio station and nightclub I was working at. Can-AM Wrestling came through to the nightclub for a small show, adn they advertised on the station i was at. At the time they had a few ex WWF guys on the roster, Doug Furnas, Phil Lafon, Kurrgan, and a couple others. They figured me, the radio DJ who was huge, would be a nice comedy act to wrestle the 2 midgets in a triangle match, help promote the show.

It worked and it was a blast. They got into town earlier in the day, and I went to help set up the ring, go over the basic falls (f***ing christ they hurt...)running back and forth in the ropes, into the turnbuckles.... just enough to not cripple myself. We set out a basic match, and although I was all for the two midgets winning and hitting me with folding chairs to do so, they said they wouldn't do that for insurance reasons (understandable). All in all it was a night to remember. And yes, in the match against the midgets, I came up short.

There is actually research showing cold water immersion will activate brown fat which can increase thermogenesis

Pun obviously intended. This line is one you should incorporate into your signature. :D

Absolutely. This could be a really powerful strategy if one were to incorporate appropriate supplements to convert white fat to brown fat along with a reasonable fat loss diet.

I dunno. I buy it at a very granular level, but the problem with most things that purport to be fat loss boosters is that your body and metabolism adapt.

Like, cardio burns calories but it's not really an amazing long term weight loss strategy at all because human metabolisms adapt. There are hunter-gatherer tribes where people go 40,000 steps a day.

So yeah thermogenesis, burning calories, it makes sense but I bet people get hungrier or whatever after being in cold water for 2 hours.

We should ask Ohtani about it at the press conference

Yes, this.

It helps, but to a very small degree overall.

Would this be something that's expected to scale in effectiveness on a directly proportional relationship with time spent in a cold environment? Or would there be a sliding scale of returns that would eventually diminish over time?

What was the story you mentioned on here before Havok, didn't you choke slam some dude on the hood of his car? lol... bouncing at the club?

No, that was just an idiot that tried to fight me. And it wasn't his car, but the owner of the car saw it go down and was cool with it. We just popped the hood and pushed it back into place. Kid came back the next week and apologized.

Of course it’s not a weight loss strategy on its own but it is without question a tool that can be used to achieve desired outcomes

Andrew Huberman’s episode on cold water exposure is excellent

Someone get Manoah and Vladdy on a plane and drop them in Lake Ontario.

Depending on the height they're dropped from there might be a tsunami.

It is. For the general public though it's probably not a strategy that would end up generating any significant outcomes. To make cold therapy work you almost have to make it part of a giant lifestyle change.

For some weight loss is hard enough without that kind of change. For those who are very disciplined and are really into "biohacking" kind of processes, it would be likely much better in the outcome column.

That's just a long winded and more contextual way of saying I agree.

No it’s not but the question was regarding Dick’s swimming regimen and his anecdotal evidence that it helped him lose weight. I just said that there are studies confirming

Guaranteed bean pole after all that swimming. Feel free to take a swing. Even if you miss the breeze would likely knock him over unless he turned sideways to become ultra-aerodynamic.

Sounds like a battle of the giants is about to go down. Grant's a giant too isn't he? 3 way battle to the death.

Yeah I think grant said he's 6'7 or 8 also. I probably nearly outweigh them combined though

Grant is the real bean poll, or so I've heard.

Havoc is Shaq, I'm Marcus Camby, Grant is Manute Bol.
