Yeah this is not the market to go with multi year deals on non-Ohtani position player free agents, so if the Jays intend on making a "big splash", then Yamamoto (if Ohtani signs elsewhere) is the way to go. Then fill in the cracks with internal options or one year deals.

The majority of big deal contracts to players signed over 33 years old look like they are going to end horrible. I'm hoping for Yamamoto + Hoskins.

sauce?

Lots of twitter. Some random was stirring it up and it's gaining steam now so who knows. I find when that happens it's usually accurate though.

Hoerner + Morel would be the meat of the trade

TIL Nico Hoerner is a slap hitting glove-first guy with wheels. I guess it doesn't make sense for the Cubs to have two plus shortstops on the team so might as well replace Nico with a better hitter who can probably be decent at second. Weird to trade for an elite SS and then move him off the position (despite Bo's middling defense) though.

I don't think the Blue Jays are in a position to trade away more offense for defense however. The lineup would look pretty ugly by replacing Bo with Hoerner.

Hoerner is misplaced at 2B, true. He's an elite SS

Dunno about that but the basic theory is that he'd be a slight downgrade on Bo at SS but Toronto would gain 1 year of SS control and Morel who is a spare part for Chicago

Of course the Cubs aren't offering Hoerner. They are probably trying to get Bo for Morel and prospects, lul.

Yeah Toronto would need to follow it up with some kind of offensive infusion. Signing a big bat elsewhere. It'll never happen anyway.

Is that you making that up? or is that what's being reported? Hoerner is a good player, but that would hurt the offense even more and he only has 1 more year of control. Not sure Morel moves the needle enough. Doesn't seem like he plays any defensive position very well.

Suzuki and Happ are good fits for LF though.

Cubs are a poor fit, really. The big news here is the Jays might be shopping Bichette. And I've got no problem with it, he's a tough or impossible resign IMO

It's just an exact value match on that baseballtradevalues website

I am sure the Cubs are shopping Morel though

Bo would look good in (blue) pinstripes

If it’s Hoerner and Morel gross. Replace shortstop and add another infielder who can’t play third

Except Atkins gains between 5-10 surplus value on almost every trade he makes. So any mock trade you come up with is more likely to be closer to reality if it has the Jays gaining between 5-10 surplus value, not an exact value match.

Something like Morel+Hoerner+Caissie for Bo plus one of Barriera/Babe/Jimenez/Barger/Nimmala would be a lot closer to realistic.

Simply add Matt Mervis

Wanted to throw Caissie in your Morel+Hoerner base because I remember rumours about the Jays being interested in him in his draft year.

I dont think he means this winter, but interesting nevertheless. Guess it makes sense if the team is mid again next year.

Well if they want to move off the Vlad/Bo core then moving Bo makes more sense right now since the return would be remarkably better and he seems much more difficult to sign long term, but I can’t see a scenario where they trade him and the 2024 team is better because of it. There would have to be a lot more moving pieces involved.

With that said, I highly doubt it happens this winter.

It depends on information only the Jays have, namely, how receptive Bo is to extension talks. Without a doubt, the Jays have attempted to talk extension.
