Omar Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2023 Posted November 18, 2023 Agree with your assessment The Yankees did not exactly position themselves to be the Ohtani favourites since they are kind of bogged down with long/massive contracts already. The Mets, who f***ing knows. All their new owner spending flopped horribly so they might be gunshy. The Dodgers have very clearly been maintaining roster and payroll flexibility for a year+ so they can sign this guy. They have to be like, 70% favourites. So you have the Dodgers up top and then a glut of teams including Toronto that could swoop in and overpay him to steal him from LA. That would include NYM, NYY, TOR, SFG, HOU, SEA, BOS, TEX. I mean, really anybody. Some of the smaller market teams could even make a case to increase payroll and extend for him. Baltimore, lmao. Imagine. They could do it. Baltimore. Don't discount the Cubs chances.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted November 18, 2023 Posted November 18, 2023 Pretty much confirmed now Makes sense. Pretty stacked bullpen and they have much cheaper homegrown options available for depth.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2023 Posted November 18, 2023 (edited) Damn... Cimber was one of our best relievers when he got traded here lol. It speaks to how pathetic that bullpen was at the time. Still think he's a good low leverage guy to have in the pen so sucks to lose him for nothing. Edited November 18, 2023 by Jays24

Seriously though, I def want him back but really hope it's not a crippling contract. He hasn't earned it.

Seriously though, I def want him back but really hope it's not a crippling contract. He hasn't earned it. Yeah I wouldn't want to sign him to a 5 year deal close to +$100M. If you can bring back Chapman on 3 year deal, would definitely be open to that but he'll likely get more given its a weak 3B class.

Someone like him isn’t going to have any market for a team that’s not thinking playoffs. Not sure anyone like that would even give him $2m, why take innings from other projects. And not sure any playoff team is going to be interested in him either. Jays could end up taking him back at half the cost if they wanted

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2023 Posted November 18, 2023 Did Jordan Romano not exist or something? Damn... guy took the words "like our best reliever" as literally our best reliever. Obviously he wasn't doing better than the guy who was closing games for us but was hoping you'd understand the post to get the point lol.

Cimber was really good and then he lost it. That's pretty typical with relievers especially ones that rely on funk/deception

That's pretty typical with relievers especially ones that rely on funk/deception You might want to refresh your memory and go check his numbers from 2021 and 2022. Then go look at who else was in our bullpen for those seasons. He literally just had one really bad year, which was this past season.

Just to be a little wild and crazy, I’ll come to the defense of Laila’s point and say he was answering the second part of your quote
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2023 Posted November 18, 2023 Just to be a little wild and crazy, I’ll come to the defense of Laila’s point and say he was answering the second part of your quote Ahhh makes sense. And relievers become good and bad all the time. 2023 could have just been one really bad year for him. I can easily see him become serviceable again in 2024 but obviously have nothing to go on with that comment lol.

If he wasn't the best reliever then why you did you say he was "like" the team's best reliever? I have no qualms with saying Cimber was among the best relievers on the team in those two seasons, but Romano was a guy who was arguably ong MLB's best relievers vs a dude who was second best in a weak bullpen.

I edited my post man. It was more to speak of how valuable Cimber was vs comparing him to Romano. That's all.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 From Rosenthal’s latest article: Some rival executives, speaking on condition of anonymity in order to avoid charges of tampering, say the Blue Jays are open to moving right-hander Alek Manoah. How open remains to be seen. The relationship between Manoah and the Jays appeared to deteriorate last season, when the pitcher regressed from his stellar 2022 campaign. Manoah, 25, twice was sent to the minors and received platelet-rich plasma injections in his right arm to end his season. Still, Jays general manager Ross Atkins talked boldly about Manoah at the GM meetings, saying he earned “the right to have a strong leg up” in the competition for the fifth starter behind Kevin Gausman, José Berríos, Chris Bassitt and Yusei Kikuchi. The Jays’ rotation depth is prompting inquiries from other clubs. The team’s need for position players seemingly would make a move possible. Atkins mentioned Bowden Francis, Mitch White and Wes Parsons as alternatives for the rotation, and top prospect Ricky Tiedemann recently was named the Arizona Fall League’s Pitcher of the Year. The problem with trading Manoah is that the Jays would be selling low, and giving up four remaining years of control. Kikuchi rebounded from a difficult 2022 to produce a 3.86 ERA over 32 starts in ‘23. The best move for the Jays might be betting on Manoah to do the same.
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 I think what's getting lost in all the Manoah stuff is that he's not that good to begin with. I mean, he's good but he's not as good as people think. In his big year, he had like a 4 xfip and 23% K rate. Decent k%-bb%. Stuff graded out around average. Doesn't have huge velo. Doesn't have anything for LHBs. Like any young SP, he can improve but he wasn't an ace IMO. It's a blessing in disguise if another org thinks it's just the pitch clock that sunk him because I think he would have regressed anyways
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 I don’t mind trading Manoah, depending on the return, but when Wes Parsons (who I have never heard of) is listed as SP depth, that’s not a good sign. They would definitely need to sign a SP to replace him if he’s moved. If the depth is Tiedemann, White, and Francis behind an established 5, then that’s a bit better.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 You can not trade Manoah unless its for very good value. 5 years left 2 until arb
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 Better have something good to say or I’m hanging up
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 Ship Manoah’s fat ass out of town. He isn’t that good and he’s a garbage teammate. Me me me guy Find an infielder please. Brendan Donovan would be good especially if they tie up 1B/DH between Vlad and another all bat guy like Hoskins or JDM

I get the feeling he's going to be ultra motivated this offseason to improve and would hate to see a massively negative value trade made mostly out of spite.

The downside to this is he comes into 2024 and looks like s*** again. The he has almost NO value. Right now there are probably a few teams that think they can fix him. That number drops rapidly with bad results again
