He was traded for, DFA’d in the offseason and then claimed on waivers by the A’s, who non-tendered him before he signed back with us, technically as a free agent.

From Wikipedia:

On November 12, 2010, Encarnacion was claimed off waivers by the Oakland Athletics. On December 2, he was non-tendered by the Athletics, making him a free agent.[12] On December 16, 2010, he signed a one-year deal with the Blue Jays worth $2.5 million, with a club option worth $3.5 million in 2012.

So technically he was a FA signing haha :P

He wasn't a FA - we traded for him for Rolen and then AA extended?

You guys are right. The old E5 dark times. I blocked that period out lol. Edwin will always be a fav of mine. The 2016 wildcard bomb for that W I’ve watched 1000 times at full volume.

Because we don’t really care about Riley Greene and we don’t care for hearing you brag about your fantasy team in non-fantasy threads

I keep it confined to Around Baseball or similar, not blue jay exclusive threads. I have respect

If I point out this is the season of Luis Robert in Around Baseball, it’s relevant

You guys are either sss guys or you’re not.

Whenever I try to pump my fantasy guys for sss I get piled on

So it's fine for you to complain about Biggio's lack of production based on small sample size (without actually looking at his statistics) but it's not ok for us to defend the guy from the same sample size when he has good numbers? That's mighty hypocritical of you.

For what it's worth Biggio has been a solid if unspectacular contributor since his recall from Buffalo in May of last season. In his last 292 plate appearances he's produced a 110 WRC+/1.7 FWAR.

Don’t take yourself too serious, Max. I wasn’t attacking Biggio and trying to induce your ire this time

When you are complaining about guys on the Jays not producing there are plenty of targets ripe for the picking. The primary option right now and easy choice should be Brandon Belt who would likely find himself DFA'd shortly if not for his $9 million contract.

I gotta admit all last year I never doubted Vlad was a generational bat but come May if it was like last year, I may have started to let doubt creep in. A lot of guys were here busting his balls all year though

Luplow DHing tonight...

Decent enough lineup although I'm not sure what Merrifield has done this season to warrant hitting so high in the order.

Yeah I was on board with Belt, worth a shot 1yr. I totally sat directly in the fence with Bassitt and said based on the numbers it was a great signing but age was a risk

Varsho pinch hit late in the game to keep him at 5th in the order possibly.

I for one was saying it was a good time to extend him

Im kinda worried Vlad will fall off after he hits the big payday though. Berrios but worse

Dont think so, he's not in it for the money, his family already has loads

Early returns from the 'improved defense' are not very good at all. Hoe long does it take for these numbers to stabilize? There are some really wacky outliers right now.

Gonna go with not enough games. Varsho has -0.3 and that's because of the first time he played CF and thought Whit was gonna get the ball.

If you've seen every game he started so far, you wouldn't think he's -0.3 (w.e the f*** that metric is)

Yeah that seems completely wrong on Varsho. Probably skewed a bit with that Chapman error in game 2 that cost a couple runs too. And Bo also has a couple errors already.

Belt and Keirmeier were both gambles. Hoping both eventually work out but at least one should.

Who knows if he wanted to be extended last season at that time when he was struggling? Probably wanted to wait until he was having another season like his 2021 season.

It's only been a week.

The Pirates are 5-2.

I'm sticking with my prediction that Vlad is extended at some point, but it might be something like Devers where it happens closer to his free agency. The hope of a team friendly deal has long gone. He's too close to free agency now to settle for anything less than what he perceives he's worth. If nothing else, the front office has shown that they don't mind paying FA dollars to players, so I'm sure they won't mind overpaying Vlad when the time comes as long as he's performing closer to 2021 levels.

To further your point, Teoscar Hernandez leads the league in Defensive Runs Saved

I'm not worried about the Jays defensively in the outfield at all. They definitely have more range and cover more ground, whereas last season guys like Tapia, Hernandez, Gurriel would all take bad routes and balls would drop in. Watching the game last night, I was very impressed. Plus, Springer in right field is so much better now than having him in CF.

Contract year. Maybe he’s going to pay attention out there

Yeah, Belt kind of felt like a free $10m, so to speak, that otherwise would’ve just gone to the bottom line.

I guess the only way it’d be bad is if they keep trying to get blood from a stone

If we could get 2021 version of KK I’d be pleased.

I don't care what KK does with the bat. As long as he plays GG defense in CF, I'm more than happy!

Ya I have no issues with him batting .230 if he's providing elite defense at CF. What we're getting currently is probably too good to be true but let's get it while we can.
