G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 Ryu doesn't rely on velocity as much, so he should be fine. I don't think the issue will be performance but his innings limitations. He just might be able to provide serviceable innings maybe 2-3 innings at a time. If his stuff is good and he's feeling OK he will certainly get the chance
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 Does anyone think that Ryu could actually come in for the 2nd half and give us some quality starts to close out the season....or are we all just assuming he's dead. I would be surprised if he pitches with any kind of effectiveness in the majors again. He doesn't come across as a train for recovery and focus on rehab kind of guy at his age. I mean maybe...but I just wouldn't bet on it.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 Command issues are usually a problem for guys coming back from TJS, when Ryu can't command the ball he gets rocked, it'll be interesting to see how that unfolds.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 I think there's a chance it happens, but I don't think it's a particularly large chance. I see the fat shaming undertones.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 Didn't Ryu after TJS in June? Unless the recovery period has drastically improved over the years, I'd be pretty surprised if he was back by mid season, much less pitching well enough to actually help the team down the stretch. I think 2023 will be a write off for him, but I guess we will see.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 Ryu making meaningful starts for the Blue Jays this season seems highly unlikely. But he also has almost no value in the bullpen and is very routine oriented so it would only make sense if he was used in planned long relief situations. That 5th Starter spot is very much up for grabs. But I am hoping our rotation is mostly sorted out by the time Ryu is healthy. Ricky T will be on this club this season will just be interesting in what role that will be.

I would expect the Jays are proceeding with a realistic expectation that Rick T MAY pitch for the Jays, and if he does, he MAY be effective. In other words, little to no reliance on him as a factor this season.

He at the bare minimum is on this club as a power reliever in August. He could also be in the rotation as early as June. He’s not like most young power arms. He doesn’t struggle with command. Atleast he hasn’t so far. Recent memory suggests the Jays won’t hesitate to push him if he continues to dominate and that’s all hes done thus far. The hype and excitement is real.

It's just as likely he doesn't get promoted to the big club. He has pitched all of 11 innings above A ball.

Also a very strong likelihood that Ricky would be on an innings limit and just be available out of the pen by September.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 Manoah had 17 innings pitched at low A, then because of COVID didn't pitch in any games in 2020. Despite that the Jays still placed him in AAA to start 2021 and after only 18 innings he went straight to the bigs. The Jays weren't f***ing around with Tiedemann either last season. Promoted him through three levels at 19 years old, and he dominated at every one of them. If he dominates again to start this season I could easily see the Jays bringing him up by June or so. One big difference though between now and 2021 when they brought Manoah up right away, is the rotation is currently waaaay better on paper than it was back then. But if they have a starter struggling and Tiedemann is dominating, I have no doubt they'll bring him up.

No doubt he will, he only pitched 79 innings last season. We might see him this season in September as a reliever, I'm not so sure.

That + his age makes any comp to Tiedemann not that appropriate.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 I'm sure the Yankees would have liked to keep him. He's been one of their best out of the BP. Jays had to be creative with the contract obviously.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 I'm reliever greedy. I'd still like to see Britton and/or Reyes brought in somehow. I don't know if either of those guys will get an MLB deal having missed last season, but boy would it be great to get them on MiLB deals with invite to spring training.
