Crazy amount of money for someone who hasn't pitched a single day in the majors. Does this make him the highest paid pitcher in the majors?

Must be fun being a Dodgers fan.

I think the Jays should probably sit out Bellinger and Chapman - they aren't good enough to put the team over the top - use the money next off-season to get someone worth getting.

Defeatist attitude. Get into the postseason, then anything can happen. Good chance Glasnow, Kershaw, and 1 other Dodgers SP are on the IL come next October.

Dodgers will be f***ed in 10 years once Ohtani retires and his payments kick in. Can't wait lol.

Because they'll be paying 68M per year to a guy not on the active roster?

They don’t care. All that matters is what’s on the books.

And? That money doesn't count towards the cap, it's already been applied during the 10 years of service.

Lol. Ya...I think the Dodgers and their fans don't give a s*** what things are gonna be like 10 years from now

As a hockey fan, the cap is terrible.

Nba's soft cap seems like the best approach. Teams can spend whatever but they get penalized heavily for doing it. Mlbs system is a joke.

It was more of a joke. These f***ers just don't stop spending lol

They might as well sign Snell too now

I mean why the f*** not right?

Hell, grab Bauer while were at it. 1 year $20 million to see if he's still got it.

Then they can have the next Japanese superstar who's getting posted next year.

Let's see if we can get the Dodgers 130+ wins in a season

I think they mean the warmup pitches on the mound, not in the bullpen.

I see so theyre trying to make it so the one team doesnt send a a guy back out after finishing the previous inning, then warming up, only to have the opposing manager put in a pinch hitter, and then change pitchers again right away.

Not sure what that changes since they can just change pitchers after the first hitter and still take up that time for the pitching change.

The Dodgers have agreed to something like a $7billion TV deal - the $700m is just coming off that and Ohtani will probably generate that $700m or more in other revenue for the Dodgers. They have built arguably a super team.

I suppose the fun part is that every other team will be a massive underdog so it takes the pressure off. I mean there is nothing the Jays can do at this point to really improve last year's club. Maybe a win or 3 here or there but The Jays current players simply have to be better. Unfortunately, Springer is no longer Springer and 2 WAR from Vlad isn't getting it done.

10:37pm: There’s a $50MM signing bonus, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today (X link). The deal does not contain any deferred money, according to Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic (on X).

Honestly who the f*** cares what the Dodgers do. They're in the NL West and the only way it'll hurt us is if we make it all the way to the World Series. It's much better than seeing the Yankees get everyone.

If Yamamoto contract same as Betts, Freeman, Ohtani with pending money after end of contract to avoid luxury tax, MLB should say that cap hit can't be cheated, so if you sign 10/12 years contract, cap hit calculate on that number of years, no matter if you have 50 years pending payments remaining to retired players. They should make an exemple with the Dodgers, charging them big penalties fees on luxury tax, so other teams won't do same. Otherwise you will have teams with 400 millions cap hit, with lot of pending payments, to reduce their cap hit to half, when 98% of other teams can't compete against them. At end attendance in stadiums will significantly drop, and people won't be interested watch games on TV.

Btw, owners of Dodgers, do the same in Premier League with Chelsea, spending several hundred millions every year on mercato.

Deferred payments count towards the luxury tax

Well give the Yankees some time - they already traded for VASTLY better hitter than any Blue Jay. They can easily sign the best three pitchers on the free agent market to put their rotation above ours.

The game is played on the field but the prize is the World Series, not a wild card - and we're a much worse team right now than we were when the season ended. We have a bottom 5 farm system and there are no free agents that are exactly thrilling or "put you over the top" types. I guess I can't see what the Jays could do here to dramatically make us a 95-100 win team.

The biggest thing the Jays can do to improve is have their porky trio of core players actually get in shape, stay in shape and produce how they are capable of. Vlad, Kirk and Manoah can add 10 wins to this team over what they provided last year.

Springer and Varsho can be better too, although Springers age might be an issue now. But Varsho in CF with a league average bat can add a couple more wins too.
