The f*** are the Mariners doing? They need any offense they can get. I’m not the biggest fan of Kelenic either, but he clearly made some adjustments this season and is still only 24.

They literally just traded him away for the middest of mid pitchers in Kowar and a prospect that has yet to pitch in the minors lmfao

I found it funny that Ryan Divish (Mariners Beat reporter) Reports the trade and then says he is turning Twitter off. His way of saying "this is f***ed up"

I think there was a better use of money out there for the Braves than Kelenic but then again every hitter they acquire is 20% better than average. But then again in that case do you really have to pay that much for a LF

That trade's a steal for the Braves. They take on money, but I like that for them, though as you mentioned, what's up with M's financially?

Weird trade on both sides

Felt like this and the Suarez trade were both bad/weird trades by the Mariners. Both cheap players that could provide above league average offense, and they got almost nothing in return

They dumped $29M in dead money for Kelenic, got a first round arm in the deal and now make a run at Soto.

For the Braves they hope they can get Kelenic down to an acceptable K-Rate to provide some value. The other two are pretty much full negative value. They paid $30m for 4 years of Kelenic. Maybe they squeeze 5 good starts out of Marco too

I don't really think Kelenic is worth $31M

Probably a decent move by the Ms to be honest. If they end up bringing in offense.

Braves need to fix Kelenic to profit which is entirely possible

Posted
Kelenic from May-onwards last season had a 88 wRC+ in 315 PA (.356 BABIP and 33 K%). Maybe the Braves can fix him (and then sign him to an insulting extension) but taking on $30m of dead money with the hopes of fixing a player is risky. If it works then obviously it will look better.

Kelenic actually showed some promise in the early part of the season. Kelenic is still just 24-years-old and has great tools and upside. Rather than trotting out a low upside guy like Rosario in LF, at least Kelenic has some potential. Braves can afford to roll the dice on him since he'll likely be hitting in the lower part of the lineup anyways, so no pressure. If the Braves could fix him, could be a steal. Worst case, his floor is likely a 1.5 - 2 WAR corner outfielder.

Marco Gonzales is meh and nothing sexy. But he can provide innings and rotation depth. Sucks taking on his contract but it's only $7.5M for one year.

Evan White was really highly touted coming up. Mariners locked him up to an extension of 6 years, $24M with two club options back in 2020 haha. Maybe a change of scenery and the Braves could help him.

Can't see the Braves even giving White MLB playing time unless they suffer multiple injuries.

Worst case scenario for Kelenic is replacement level or worse.

Mariner fan reaction to this reminds me of us when Travis Snider was traded

Very similar prospect flops, Kelenic and Snider

Kelenic still has a chance of course but his "mean projection" rest of career probably looks close to Snider's career. i.e. one or two more useful seasons but just a platoon corner OF who stops getting work by 30.

Weren't there pages of people trying to make fun of AA lol

No? Where was that? I think the vast majority of people believe AA is now a very good GM. Is he perfect? No, he still makes mistakes, but he's very good.

Ozuna is at DH and Olson at 1B. White will be cut before April.

White has options. Braves have 40 man spots. He is supposed to be ready by spring training. So he is AAA bound

nobody was "making fun" of him

his ATL track record speaks for itself

I simply said his recent series of moves were kind of nuts. Not that the moves themselves were bad, in context, but his handling of multiple assets leading up to being forced to make these moves was questionable.

Then jaysblue did his usual ******** and accused me of having a personal vendetta against AA!

wow!

If his floor was 1.5-2 WAR the Mariners wouldn't be dumping him in a dead money deal. This was the best season of his career by far and he barely even fit that floor threshold with a higher than sustainable BABIP. It's like saying Vlad's floor is a 3 WAR 1B/DH, as has been demonstrated, it's considerably lower. Kelenic's is below replacement.

100%. There's no way his floor is 1.5-2 WAR

No one hates AA more than me, and I still think he is a terrible person. However, he has learned a lot as a GM. He added by subtraction losing some voices that influenced him far too greatly. Two years in LA and the Sabermetrics program enrollment obviously helped him out. Still think he has trouble building a 40 man roster. He is a top 10 GM in baseball. Still wouldn't hire him, and would never cheer for the Braves because of him (and their fans) but he is good at building a 26 man roster which is probably pretty important
