L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 Wander not playing next year. Jim should jump ship Link?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 Link? Links aren’t necessary when the primary purpose is to troll Jim.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 I read that the arrest of the girl and her family is imminent Yeah, probably for extortion, which doesn’t mean it’s not all true. Even in Bauer’s case when it was essentially proven to be a hoax, he was already f’d. Tried and fried.

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2023 Posted November 24, 2023 Gibby coming back to the dome next September....
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2023 Posted November 24, 2023 Gibby coming back to the dome next September.... Depending on how our season goes, we might be begging him to comeback for the 3rd time by that time loll.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2023 Posted November 24, 2023 Depending on how our season goes, we might be begging him to comeback for the 3rd time by that time loll. I think the vast majority of us would love to see Gibby come back for a 3rd time regardless of how our season goes.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2023 Posted November 24, 2023 Josh Giddy busted for Wander Franco stuff. I wonder if the actions will be equal; NBA vs MLB Apparently he averages 15 on...and off the court.

Laika Community Moderator Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 That guy seems like a wannabe reporter But every team who can afford it is offering Ohtani max money...
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 Man... 500M to 600M is such unreal money for a single player. We're at a point where it might a better investment to use those funds on several other players. Ohtani alone might make more than the Rays entire roster loll. Wish our 9 to 5 jobs could have the inflation that all pro sports players are getting lol.

I wonder if the actions will be equal; NBA vs MLB A 21 yo dating or "dating" a 15 year old isn't my cup of tea...but it isn't that same as Jared the Subway guy or the priests or something like that. We all have grandparents or great grandparents or someone in our ancestry where the man/boy was 19-21 and the woman/girl was 14-16 when they got married or started having kids. Still happens a lot today in non-Western society. To expect humanity to change over 100 or so years to the point where young athletes have to be indefinitely suspended. I dunno, doesn't sit right with me. I know some dads of teenage daughters will rage at the thought but that's just my opinion.

Was watching mLB Network at some point in the past week and it was said the Jays have 2 budget numbers in mind for 2024, one that includes Ohtani and one that doesn't.

I wonder if this is the same scenario for all of the bidding teams with regards to having extra funds for Ohtani.

Dunno, on one hand it makes perfect sense that you'd only blow your wad if you land the big fish, but on the other hand if you're willing to go that high for only 1 player, why not go that high anyways and maybe land 3 upper-mid guys?
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 Dunno, on one hand it makes perfect sense that you'd only blow your wad if you land the big fish, but on the other hand if you're willing to go that high for only 1 player, why not go that high anyways and maybe land 3 upper-mid guys? Marketing. Ohtani brings eyes. Ohtani Marketing Profit >>>> 3 randoms.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 Marketing. Ohtani brings eyes. Ohtani Marketing Profit >>>> 3 randoms. Yeah Ohtani from a business perspective pays much better dividends than signing 3 random solid players (e.g. Hoskins, Teo Hernandez, Chapman etc.).
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 Yeah Ohtani from a business perspective pays much better dividends than signing 3 random solid players (e.g. Hoskins, Teo Hernandez, Chapman etc.). But one injury and you're totally f***ed. Baseball of all sports has never been a sport where 1 guy can carry you all the way. Heck, him and Trout couldn't even make the Angels relevant together all those years. What we know is that if you win and mash some Homers, the eyes will automatically follow you.

What we know is that if you win and mash some Homers, the eyes will automatically follow you. The Blue Jays already project to be a solid team before making any off season additions. I'd argue they would benefit as much as anyone in baseball by adding an elite talent as a means to instantly elevate the roster to true contender status. My only concern with an Ohtani addition would be what level of funding would remain to fill the other holes in the roster (left field and third base).

Isn't that probably true for all 8 teams in the running for Ohtani?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 But one injury and you're totally f***ed. Baseball of all sports has never been a sport where 1 guy can carry you all the way. Heck, him and Trout couldn't even make the Angels relevant together all those years. What we know is that if you win and mash some Homers, the eyes will automatically follow you. If the Jays signed Ohtani, they would have to target alternatives to cover up other holes/areas on the roster rather signing some of the top options available at 3B, LF or DH or look to the trade market. For example, you probably can't target a top FA third baseman like Chapman or Candelario. Instead you have to target maybe someone like Eduardo Escobar or trade for someone like Yoan Moncada (with White Sox eating most of his salary). Depending on where the Jays play Ohtani (DH or left field), you probably don't target bats like Hoskins, Soler, Teo Hernandez or JD Martinez afterwards. Instead maybe you go after someone like Gallo, Brantley, or Heyward who you could platoon with someone or bring back KK or Belt. If Rogers gives Atkins the green light to spend and go all in with Ohtani, then yeah trade for Soto as well why not haha. Bring in some other top FA's to build around Ohtani as well. But I'm sure Atkins won't have an unlimited payroll so they would have to bargain hunt in other areas. Would the Jays be better off heading into 2024 with Ohtani, a lesser corner OF/DH bat like Gallo, Brantley or Heyward and 3B bat like Moncada or better with signing some FA's like Hoskins, Soler and Candelario? From a baseball perspective and a marketing perspective.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 If you haven't watched this already check out the Baseball Doesn't Exist breakdown of the kind of revenue Ohtani generated for the Angels. So many assumptions there, and doesn't include the revenue already being made in those areas. Many teams a 600k attendance increase (7500 per game) in ticket sales would be capacity for the whole season. Not to mention that there was only an 11.1% increase in games that Ohtani pitched for the Angels, that economist can't be right claiming a 20% increase just having Ohtani on the roster. It included making the playoffs revenue, which many of the teams in play already were in the playoffs. Jersey sales, that number took into consideration the net sales, not the profits. The in-stadium ad revenue it's tough to say. Rogers prefers their own name being there. Unless there is revenue for Rogers in Japan they might not forgo that. There is no doubt that Ohtani adds value. But until teams can have direct TV contracts in Japan these revenues just don't feel real enough for a team.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 With that said, a contract with an agreement to do a Rogers produced reality show (in Japanese and English), could be game changing revenue (although I'm sure against MLB rules somehow).
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 Many holes on this roster to fill for the jays. Shohei is dynamic but he also leaves the rest of your roster shot if you hamstring yourself to be able to spend 5 mill here and there. We want to do creative things with our money. Competing with the Mets and Dodgers plus other random teams, does not sound like a smart plan. Do we really want to wait on Shohei. Just attack the market for guys you love and start offering guys contracts you believe in. Lets see it. Signing Shohei is a bad contract unless hes an elite ace and elite hitter for many years because teams don't let that gazzelle prowl the outfield for some reason. If he signs with the jays i want him patrolling LF some days. Prob gunna be opt out heavy 2.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Nice pickup by the Tigers. Further removed from TJ, Maeda could get back close to his pre-injury level.
