this one?

i guess the only possible defense would be that he had an acute injury at the time that limited him to 60% of top speed and prevented him from sliding. lol

Yeah, that's the one. Crazy to even send him home on that if he's that physically compromised

Not with you here. To “game the system” in this way, you’d have to draft and develop someone with ROY potential. Then make sure he’s on your Opening Day roster. Don’t be jelly.

No, connor is definitely right on this one. The whole point of this comp pick was to draft and develop and play and eventually pay your top stars. Do what you're supposed to do as a team. Win. No gaming the system here. Just sucks that Baltimore came along so strong and all their top talent turned out. I mean, the Orioles of 21-22 were no different than the Jays of 18-19 in terms of the level and amount of talent set to graduate to the MLB. Theirs all panned out about as good as they could have hoped while the Jays guys have been serviceable but not great.

Yeah and don’t forget it doesn’t always work out. Pre CBA- nobody really would’ve thought it was odd if a guy like Jordan Walker stayed down the first month or two to get some more seasoning. If they were rolling the dice for the comp pick, they lost on the deal

Stanton’s agent fired back saying people should think twice before signing with NYY. Not that it’d matter, but gotta defend your guy. Was a low class comment by Cashman.

The Padres operate within a bottom-third television market, with a fan base nationally considered to be generally apathetic, but Preller sternly believed the locals would rally around his team if an ownership group properly invested in it. Before his passing, Preller saw that vision become a reality. Despite a disappointing, playoff-less finish, the Padres set a new attendance record in 2023, selling the second-most tickets in baseball and drawing more than 3 million fans for only the second time in their history. Record revenues came with it.

Great businessman. Tampa had more success on the field, but he put a more intriguing product on the field and made his team worth hundreds of millions more than Tampa. Tv deal was a sour note but they were regrouping.

Next man up will probably not carry on the vision

Hmm could explain the spending spree. I remember when the old Tigers owner was in his late 80s he was spending like crazy to try and win a WS. Wasn't his problem.

Nope. Basic business strategy of overspending to generate growth. It worked in spades by all indicators. Meanwhile teams like Oakland and TB cry about their small market and do nothing to generate excitement but churn out prospects that aren’t going to sell any commercials or tickets.

That's way too shortsighted. It might have worked in spades for a couple of years but the team was taking out loans toward the end of the year and is now looking to slash payroll. And this is only a year or two in. Imagine in a couple more years what it's going to look like.

Why are you bringing up Tampa, these orgs run nothing a like, meat?

I read it was generally a pretty normal practice, but the timing of it looked real bad.

The best part of his quote was, Players, " both FOREIGN and domestic" and let me add in that Stantons agent is Yamamotos agent. LOL

Because you dumbass, there’s more to running a business than W-L. People will suck TB’s knob because of W-L but say that SD did something s*****.

SD clearly ran a better business model since 2017. Don’t let some recent press deter you from the fact that SD added $600m to their franchise value… at a much fast % rate than Tampa. Not just the years turning

Oh well that matters than for at least one player lol

So you were having a conversation in your head and out of no where bring up Tampa as Padres owner dies? Gotcha. ;)

My friend, I keep track of running arguments here. It’s like if “playoff roster” becomes relevant in a situation 3 months from now, I keep the receipts.

Then quote them, moron. That's how it works.

Two interesting DFAs today

Josh Staumont and Cal Quantrill

Yeah, I saw the Quantrill one and wondered if it was just a salary dump to save them $6.6M via arbitration which is the Guardians way?

Well salary dump yes, but he also has been straight trash. His xFIP is awful. I'd still consider claiming him but I'd also probably try to DFA him right away to send to AAA

Maybe chalk that up to shoulder inflammation he suffered with last season. He threw his fair share of innings the last three years. There's something there. Bring him home.

Did SD (Preller) create a team that was built to win in the playoffs, but unfortunately for them, not built to win enough in the regular season to get into the playoffs? FWIW, I do agree with the premise that SD invested in the organization and is reaping the rewards of that. I do hope it's sustainable and they find the right owner to take over and continue to grow the franchise.

I think some team will trade for him. It's not that much $$$ and his results were good for long enough (2020-2022) that some might think he is a DIPS overperformer.

2023 looked like full regression. But, 99 innings. If he sucks in 2024 then yeah he was just getting lucky in 2020-2022. One last try for Cal.

I think for Toronto specifically he would be a nice addition. Kind of like adding another Manoah... lottery ticket SP5. Will only be 29. Has decent velo, I wonder if a repertoire change could work.

He is a kitchen sink pitcher with 6 pitches but the stuff grades are all over the place.

Fourseamer 19.1% 80

Cutter 24.1% 101

Splitter 13% 115

Sinker 23.7% 84

Change 9.1% 86

Curveball 10.9% 102

So, bad fastballs but the cutter is okay.

I guess he's already throwing about as many cutters as he can. Hard to do like, 35% cutters.

Similar to Bassitt except Bassitt has an extra command level AND a better sinker. 92 stuff+ sinker is a lot different than 84.

If the Jays are dumpster diving Canadians, I'd rather Quantrill over Votto. $6M or so plus a marginal prospect isn't that bad for a depth piece starter.

Bonus: yet another legacy player
